I liked this book and how unique the plot is. It is definitely not like other KH books I’ve read that completely blew it out of the water, but still worth the read if you’re looking for something not as devastating as her other books.

Aside from the fact that there are some pretty antiquated descriptions of autism in this book, it’s a wonderful heart warming story of redemption and overcoming. One of Hannah’s earlier books, a little different than her more recent ones.

A complaint that I have that often took me out of the story is that some of the character development seems forced. For example, Elle realizing she’s self absorbed, it felt like she was being purposefully dense. There were multiple instances where she noted that Cal was looking at her longingly but didn’t realize he had been in love with her since they were kids until he finally kissed her. And for as accomplished as she believes her sister, Dr. Julia Cates is, she underestimates Julia’s perspective quite a bit throughout the book.

Otherwise, I found this book explored the notion of finding healing in unexpected places in a slow and intentional way with a bit of haunting energy. This book shows that your life can completely implode in the most unexpected ways with a magnitude you can never plan for and still, you will find a way to rebuild. And perhaps the setting of that rebuilding is in the last place you ever thought you would find peace with people you never thought could possibly understand you.

It was a very predictable storyline from start to finish. It also did not do a good job of representing 2006-era knowledge of child psychology, despite the main character being a renowned psychiatrist. The discussion of autism for the first third of the book was pretty clearly limited to the author's knowledge, rather than what a psychiatrist would have known in 2006.

Heel goed boek. Vanaf bladzijde 1 zat ik erin en werd ik meegezogen in het verhaal. Einde was wel voorspelbaar.

i don’t tend to venture away from romance very often if at all. the only reason i picked this up was because it was the book of the month in my book club. but i’m so very glad i did. this was beautiful and heartbreaking. i can’t tell you how many times i cried as i read this. but in the end it was all worth it. i love alice and i will think of her for a very long time. julia as well. i know that this one will stay with me for a while.
