I thoroughly enjoyed this YA historical fiction about Crow and Osh. Osh is a refugee from the mainland, living off the islands of Cape Cod in the early 20th Century. Crow washed ashore near Osh's refuge as a small baby, clutching only a scrap of paper. Osh, Crow and their cat, Mouse, live simply, but comfortably enough with the help of their nearest neighbor, Miss Maggie, who takes care of Crow's education. One day, when Crow sees a fire off nearby Penikese Island, she begins to ask questions about who she is and where she came from.

I liked this book and the characters, but it was slightly confusing at first. The setting was difficult to figure out, but made more sense as the book went on. I loved the premise of trying to find out who you are, searching for it, and finding out you are who you make yourself to be.

Baby Crow washed up on an island off the east coast and was taken in by Osh, a man who has isolated himself from society and lives off the land. Now twelve years old, Crow has been raised by Osh and their neighbor Miss Maggie, but she can no longer just wonder where she came from--she needs answers. Little does she know that her answers are just a boat ride away as she unravels her personal mystery. There is so much love in this book and I really love how the entire story came together to define family. Tearing up as I write this! Happy that this book isn't as uncomfortable and heart-wrenching as Wolf Hollow.

Middle school.

This is another beautiful book from Lauren Wolk. A story about identity and belonging, it is the perfect book for a reading group as it brings so many themes together. As good as Wolf Hollow - this is a writer to watch out for!

Very strong sense of place, with a main character who is struggling to puzzle out her past. Has a mystery which isn’t too hard to solve, and a bit of suspense, but not enough to really frighten. Some lovely writing. Enjoyable historical fiction, if more firmly situated in place than time.

Solid historical fiction featuring likable characters (I'm especially fond of Mouse the cat) and a unique setting. Wolk writes beautifully of life by the sea and the human longing to belong to a place and a family. I hadn't known the story of Penikese Island before reading this book but was inspired to learn more.

Listened to it on audio. A beautiful, heartfelt story- reminiscent of books by Scott O’Dell that I read as a kid.

Lauren Wolk has an amazing talent in that she can transport you into her books more so than many authors I read growing up in my middle school years and even nowadays. As I was reading Beyond the Bright Sea I felt like I was walking amongst the islands that make up the Elizabeths. In both of her novels she has taken a time period in the past and made me want to be a part of that time.

In this story we meet Crow, Osh, and Miss Maggie who drive the plot along effortlessly. We are taken on Crow's journey of self-discovery as she searches for her own place in the world around her. Without giving too much away, I feel like the answers and the adventures that Crow seeks and gets entangled in are necessary for her to become who she is at the end of the book.

I particularly love a story that can keep me on my toes and fools me when I feel like I know where the next turns are going to be, but Lauren Wolk got me a handful of times during this read!

I would highly recommend this story and also Wolf Hollow for the mere ability to get to know the characters that live within the covers! Definitely should be in the running for Newbery next month!
