A great way to kick off the fall season! Spooky in a paranormal and psychological sense. Eleanor was an interesting character and I think everyone who picks this book up can see themselves in her a little (if you don't then you probably had a good childhood).
I had high hopes, especially since Stephen King called it one of the truly scary novels.
It was indeed well written and easy to follow with interesting characters. But I was expecting more tension out of it, there were some times which could be described as eery but all in all it was more a novel for me than a scary story.
Perhaps I'm not familiar enough with the way storytelling was back in the times of Miss Jackson or what was considered spooky in that era.
I enjoyed reading it but my expectations weren't met.

I don't think I need to say much about this. If you'd like to read a review, there are plenty available by people that write more eloquently than I.
What I do wish to say is that a) I found this book exceedingly charming and b) I loved Eleanor (one of my top favorite characters of all time), and if I had kids, would consider that as a name therefore c) It's probably a very good thing that I'm not having kids because I'd be a relatively terrible parent to name a child after Haunting at Hill House's Eleanor.

This is the classic haunted house story for a reason, but The Haunting Of Hill House goes even further by adding in psychological terror. It's a downward spiral for one character in particular who finds herself particularly affected by the spooky nature of Hill House - often drawing on her own daydreams, past, and group superstition. Nell wants so desperately to be an individual and to believe that something interesting must happen to her at some point in her life.
A lovely little spooky story to kick off the horror season.
