A swashbuckling, high seas, fantasy adventure full of ship bound sword-fights, scheming pirates and morally grey characters that you’re almost guaranteed to root for—Tricia Levenseller has quickly proven herself to be the master of action packed fantasies with heavy romance plots and, having loved this soo much, I cannot wait to get my hands on her entire backlist!

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

This was such an fun and enjoyable read! The tone is fairly lighthearted and our protagonist, Alosa was a sassy, sweet talking pirate whose charismatic, loveable rogue persona could definitely give Jack Sparrow a run for his money. She’s an incredibly resourceful character and manages handle any situation with panache and authority—be it from behind the bars of her enemies’ brig or fighting for her life—but her wicked sense of humour was what I loved most!

The only time we really see Alosa deviate from any of her (well thought out) plans is around the utterly charming Riden, and the chemistry that blossoms between them—as well as their cat and mouse game of wits—was thoroughly entertaining.

But Riden (as first mate and brother to rival captain, Draxen) is seemingly torn between his growing attraction to Alosa—who’s secrets he’s been tasked with uncovering—and his loyalty to his cruel brother. It’s an aspect that really adds depth to his character and something I’d love to see explored more in the sequel.

The action was well written and though incredibly fun, isn’t sugar coated in the slightest. We definitely explore some darker themes through Alosa, who’s more than willing to get her hands dirty. Through her, Levenseller expertly conveys the hardships and danger that that pirating entails—especially for women, and as such does contain TWs for violence, murder, sexual harassment and attempted sexual assault. That being said, it is still a YA fantasy so nothing is ever really too explicit.

Overall, this a fun, thoroughly thrilling high seas fantasy with spectacular twist and mythical aspects that’s perfect for fans of pirates, empowered female protagonists and enemies to lovers/only one bed tropes.

A massive thank you to The Tandem Collective and Pushkin press for the PB copy (and all the other PR goodies, which I loved.)

I LOVED this book. One of my new favorites and this is the book I picked up right after a big reading slump I was in for a good 6 months to a year. The plot is amazing, the characters are so very enjoyable and everything is just a 👩‍🍳💋
Would recommend to everyone for a perfect fantasy/ romance book!!

Very well paced out. There was not any moment where I felt it was filler or un needed. Romance was great and it was just very fun

A very fun and short read. This was the first book I’ve read about pirates, and I easily found myself immersed in its world. The overall story was a little predictable, but I didn’t mind it. There were a few shocks around the end that even I didn’t see coming though. I’d recommend this book to someone that wants a quick read that still drags you into the story with a tight grip.

Unlike a lot of people, I’m not a particular connoisseur of pirate adventure stories, not having been raised on tales of The Little Mermaid or the adventures of Jack Sparrow. Yes, I’m probably admitting to serious blasphemy, but oh well. However, the idea of a female Jack Sparrow was totally alluring and I was sold on the concept.

Alosa is gifted, talented, brave, sarcastic, and wonderfully ruthless. All of which make her a brilliant Pirate. She’s not fettered by pesky little things such as emotion and conscience. But she has honor, and she’s found a match in Riden. Riden is somewhat of a cinnamon roll for a pirate, which makes him a good foil for Alosa’s wily ways, but he’s no naive doormat either, and gives her a run for her money. I don’t have a lot to say about him, but he cute.

This was an easy fantasy adventure read, the pacing is fine, if a little slow at the start, and it’s fun to tag along with Alosa’s scheming. The romance didn’t make my heart race or anything, but it has potential? The fantasy part kicks in in the second half, which makes things infinitely more interesting and takes them up a notch. I hope the treasure hunt gets wild and bloody and a little crazy in the next book.

This was pretty solid for a YA debut. It got a little bit repetitive towards the middle, and it was fairly predictable, but the beginning and the ending were fun. The romance wasn't super believable, but it was entertaining and cute. I would say that it gave me similar vibes to Throne of Glass, although there are no fae involved in this one. I am definitely interested in reading some of Tricia Levenseller's adult books.

Really loved this, it was very entertaining, and I liked Alosa's perspective and learning about what she does and all that.

I read this book in a day and I enjoyed it. I have never read a book about pirates before but it was cool.
There were no big surprises or plot twist (except for one unexpected thing which I didn't like). I did really like the main characters though.

It was pretty average in my opinion but I still had a great time reading it and I will definitely be reading the second book.
