Trudi Canavan is just great. I really liked both main characters and am excited to read what will happen to them next.

Cut the parts about Rielle out of the book and you'd have a more interesting book to read. While she's important in later books, in this one her story just drags on pulling you out of Tyen's story.

Pacing made it difficult to stick with at times, especially at the beginning when new characters were being introduced and the narrator rotated.

Toward the end, pacing picked up and the book became hard to put down. Though there are some things that bugged me, I'm looking forward to book 2.

It was a reread for me and one that I enjoyed immensely. Having read The Magicians Guild trilogy years ago I've read many of Trudi Canavan's books since.

In Thief's Magic we get introduced to Tyen and Rielle, the two main character with two completely different storylines that don't intersect (yet).

Tyen is a young sorcerer studying to be a historian. During an archaeological expedition he finds an old book of magic that introduces him to the magic of a thousand years ago and with that other concepts of magic.

Rielle is a young woman living in a world where the use of magic is only allowed for priests while everyone else is severely punished for it. Having been able to sense magic since she was a child she has been forced to hide it.

This book is a introduction to Tyen and Rielle and the worlds they live in. A big focus of this book is worldbuilding, which I love, but there is still plenty of action to accompany it. I was excited to venture into the worlds of Tyen and Rielle again and can't wait to read the other books in the series!

I was given a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book started out great. The story almost immediately had my attention and I read almost 60 pages before I fell asleep. But as the story went on I didn't find it as great. I liked Tyen's side of things but Rielle 's story was a bit boring to me. I didn't see how her story fit with Tyen's at all. almost 600 pages and you never find out their connection.

The writing was good and the characters were well fleshed out but the book lacked a lot of plot for me as well as being as long as it was and you never saw their connection. I liked the idea's and possibility of where this could be headed but this first book in my opinion could have cut out 200 pages and it would have been a lot better.

I am interested to see where this story goes and i understand that book one may have just been a world building book so I plan to keep an eye out for following books and hope that offer a lot more than book one does.

3.5 stars. Rather enjoyable; however, there were times when the story dragged a bit. The characters were well developed and the magical world was pretty cool. I am not sure how Tyen and Rielle connect yet, I guess I would have to listen to book 2...
