I was hoping this would be better than it actually was. Firstly, I had issues with the narrator who somehow managed to make 11 year old characters sound like tea drinking old women. She was definitely more talented at doing voices for adults yet gave a character from Jamaica a Scottish accent. Really? The story had a lot of potential, chocolate that makes you immortal? How awesome does that sound? But the execution was frankly ridiculous. The villain was not very villainous and at times he was just sad. Too many strange characters and weird episode that seemed to have nothing to do with the plot at all. Someone should have reined this author in to make this story easier to follow.

Excellent book for the 7-10 year old set. Will be recommending. Quite the magical adventure. Hope there are more sequels coming soon!

The Whizz Pop Chocolate Shop by Kate Saunders (YA)

This is a cute read. Lily and Oz are twins and discover that they have magical powers when they move into their new home. There they find a talking invisible cat and Spike, a talking rat. With their new friend and neighbor, who also has magical powers, they are recruited to work for a very special spy unit to find some magical chocolate molds of their deceased uncles. There was a decent plot to this book, with a good mix of action and humor. The characters were fun. I enjoyed it. I borrowed this book from my local library.

An utterly bizarre and delightful tale that my daughter loved. Very british, very eccentric, and lots of fun. I LOVED Demerara's narcissistic yet endearing character. Lots of great life lessons imbedded in strange and quirky characters and dialog.

The book features a kidnapping by an “evil uncle” who is motivated by a decidedly unrequited love that is stalkerish. The child who is kidnapped cares for this uncle - I felt unsettled by this relationship and it did not feel like appropriate modeling. Children join a secret police unit. There is a future vision of parents carrying a coffin for a baby who the mom is currently pregnant with, and this is discussed in detail.

Solid read for when you want a good children's book. Do not judge by the cover and title. Only 30% of this book was actually about a chocolate shop. Also the title was so random, like not once in this book did it say whizz pop. Cute magic I guess.
