I read this in a day, and it was cute, but I didn’t find either character super redeeming. I found Avery to be closed off and Ryan to be a bit blah. They worked well together, but sparks never really flew. It felt like they were together out of convenience.

As a romance, meh. The gymnastics part was cool, but this was not the most exciting book I've read. Pretty shallow feeling although it had its good parts.

Unfortunately I was enjoying the book until Ryan made a decision that cast him in a light I personally couldn't forgive him for.

With the summer Olympics coming up, I dove right into Head Over Heels by Hannah Orenstein.

This was a heartwarming story about love, grief, perseverance, finding new dreams, and fighting for what is right all set against the backdrop of competitive gymnastics.

Additionally, the story weaves in the darker parks of gymnastics including the Assault findings with the US Gymnastics team doctor and the athletes struggle with mental health, isolation, and body dysmorphia.

Overall, I had fun reading this book and learned a lot about gymnastics

yeah this is going to be a no from me.

the book summary alludes to a scandal and it’s impact on the main character’s relationship and that “scandal” turns out to be horrific experiences of sexual violence in the gymnastic sport space. the inclusion of sexual assault stories in the book does not surprise me, but what the author did with this plot line was not good. for the book supposedly focusing on this plot line, not many details were given and I don’t think it was fleshed out well. I don’t think this plot line was meant for a romance book. it tried to be two things at once and failed.

ALSO, the most annoying part was that the conflict between Avery and Ryan was because Ryan wanted to work for her former coach who was EMOTIONALLY ABUSIVE and TAKE HALLIE WITH HIM, even after Avery told Ryan about her experience. he only decided to not take the job when he witnessed the abuse in person. for a book that is supposed to be about bringing awareness to sexual violence and abuse, I can’t believe that was the road the author tried to take.

of course, after this happened, nothing could redeem ryan for me, even after he made nice gestures and won Avery back. donating three thousand dollars to her foundation to protect gymnasts doesn’t cover it for me, SORRY. call me crazy I don’t care.

definitely don’t recommend.

I think the worst part about this was that I went in thinking it was a standard romcom? Which, no. As a matter of fact, and romance is pretty much back burner and fade to black. This is about gymnastics, and if you like gymnastics, this is the book for you. I enjoyed it quite a bit, I was just maybe looking for something else. Also, I kind of didn't like Ryan much.

Head Over Heels is the perfect quick but fun book to read this summer.

It will definitely lighten hour Covid weary mind and almost makes up for missing the Olympics this summer.

It is about two former elite gymnasts, one who made it to the Olympics and the other who suffered a devastating injury at the Olympic trials. They join up to train a young Gymnast on her quest for gold and, of course, romance ensues.

This was fun! I’ve always thought gymnastics was such a cool sport, so it was interesting to read a book centered around it. The actual gymnastics parts of the book seemed pretty authentic, and it was clear that the author had knowledge on it. Also, it was good that this book addressed serious topics within the sport.

The romance element was cute, and I thought Avery was a good POV character. Ryan was a good love interest, though I will say I wasn’t a fan in some parts. I’m glad he had to grovel a bit. I wish there was a longer epilogue that gave more details, but overall a good book!
