My wish is to be as educated as him someday, even though it will seal my faith the same way as his.

Super powerful writing from a man who is imprisoned for life for being a journalist in a fascist regime. I borrowed the audiobook from my local library and relished every word. I hope that more secret pages may emerge from prison but I will not hold my breath.

Another thing that makes this writing more authentic is that Altan will not be interviewed on television. There will be no book junket. Altan will not be a keynote speaker at the New Yorker Festival. There is certainly the voice of someone who has a healthy ego in this book but what is written here is an important and timely message that resounds as a warning. History has repeated itself over and over again in Turkey.

If you need some inspiration about the importance of maintaining a free and open democracy, read the words of Ahmet Altan-- across a globe and translated from a different language there is a universal message of the importance and value of freedom.

A moving account of/by author Ahmet Altan about his imprisonment since 2016 in Turkey, his home country, where he was rounded up, tried, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was accused of giving "subliminal messages" in 2016 in support of the attempted coup.

"I am writing this in a prison cell.
But I am not in prison.
I am a writer.
I am neither where I am nor where I am not.
You can imprison me but you cannot keep me here.
Because, like all writers, I have magic. I can pass through your walls with ease."

Audio is fine, but I would've probably got more out of this book if I read it on the page.

The review on the cover "Read this - it will explain why you ever read anything, why anyone ever writes" by A. L. Kennedy might sound like clickbate material, but in fact it happens to be the best/only way to describe this book.
