A Time for Mercy

worthy sequel. Heads up for some heavy themes

It’s always great to go back to Clanton and the world of the Brigances. A heartbreaking story with the Gambles, and vintage Grisham. Race was present even though it wasn’t. My only issue is I think the endings were rushed. We could have had less “they ate lunch and talked strategy” and more resolution on Smallwood. I doubt we’ve seen the last of the Gambles.

The book begins with a brutal and abusive first scene, which almost made me put it down.

The story line was interesting and educational, but again more brutal scenes followed. Then the main character, Jake, does something out of character and that kind of lost the book for me. Later another element of the plot did not make common sense.

This feels like a book that the author decided t0 finish up quickly. He states in the Author's Note at the end that he began the story five years earlier, and it appears to be quickly finished it to get it into print. Not his best work.

A fantastic page turner. As always a look into the slow wheels of the justice system. Read this book and ask yourself, would you have pulled the trigger?

I think this is my favorite Jake brigance to date. I would give it 4.5 stars so I kindly rounded up to 5. Another hard fought battle with some of my favorite characters.

I listened to about 30% of the audio book. The introduction was great, but from there the book went downhill. The narrator’s style was so annoying, filled with unpredictable and unnecessary pauses, that I really struggled with concentrating on the actual story. The story itself was so loaded with minutiae that I found myself frequently daydreaming. Not recommended.
