This book was a bit of a rollercoaster of my enjoyment. I started out really enjoying a cute fluffy story, but quickly got annoyed by the protagonist. Then I started realising that the story is not actually fluffy at all, but about a toxic relationship. Realising that I started liking the book a lot more. While it is hard to read about abuse, I think that part of the story was well done. While I never truly warmed up to Noah, I was a lot more okay with reading about him.

What annoys me about Noah’s character is that it almost seems to mock teens. Give teens some credit, because Noah was a naive ass who really doesn’t know how life works outside of the internet, and is obsessive over social media. Idk, as someone who was and is in fandom a lot, it felt insulting to read about such an unbearably helpless character. Teens really aren’t that stupid. Some of it got better with some character development but it still wasn’t great.

id have rated this lower if i hadnt been in a contemporary mood recently so emery lee you are one lucky fucker
unlikeable main character.... unrealistic plot- not talking about the trans meet cute blog but rather the fact that noahs response to everything that happens with the diary and generally, just in his life, is unbelievable- makes for a... questionable book. and cringeworthy. are we really still using the word 'binch' in 2021?
surprisingly, brian was my favourite character although he got literally like 10 pages of pagetime- which goes to show how unlikeable these characters are. devin was a little too meek for me. and drew can go fuck himself
the ending was nice enough i suppose, albeit predictable
2.5 stars because as i said, im into contemporary right now

  • I was drawn tot his book by the cute cover. Reading the description it felt like a story with much potential and I love reading about all types of relationships and people finding their true identity (trans representation).
  • However… I almost DNF 10% into the story as I really did not like Noah: he is a total brat, self-righteous, so judgmental and expects so much from everyone around him but seems to be giving little back in return! I pushed through, hoping it would get better…it didn’t: at 28% I was getting annoyed with the love narrative, I’m a fan of the fake dating trope but this one felt very uncomfortable and Drew feels kind of off… And then at 35% Noah just becomes mean!
  • I know I’m not the target audience being a white female of 36 but there’s many young adult books that I truly do like a lot; this one just doesn’t do it for me: Noah is insufferable! Though I have to say at 78% you finally get a glance of the nice guy underneath…
  • Only reason I finished is because I chose it as part of the Diverse Baseline challenge and there was no time to read another book for the prompt this month. But I will scan through the other books for this prompt to read later on and get a more positive experience!

I have so many feelings about this but in short I loved the ending I almost started crying over the reviews and I'm apart of the Devin fanclub and the Brian fanclub (love Noah and Becca too ofc)
