A beautiful book about immigration and the choices that parents make from moment to moment to best protect their children and preserve a dream. I was struck multiple times by the courage and unfathomable nature of the separation of families and the long term consequences. Not only the pain of being forced from loved ones, but also being treated as a criminal. Engel had a beautiful writing sensibility and I'd read more from her.

This was a beautiful, harrowing portrait of a family torn apart through their decisions (or indecisions) and it's impact on their lives. Through alternative perspectives we meet Talia, a fifteen year old daughter who has been sent to a reform school in the remote mountains of Columbia, interspersed with the story of her parents who now live on different continents. I found Infinite Country a quick read with a deep message. I was a bit confused towards the end of the book as the narration changed slightly, and I'm not sure it did much for the story. Although fiction, this story could be true for any family who has had to make difficult decisions to stay or leave the country of their birth for opportunities.
