God I love Kel. She might come off as a little one-note and a little too good for the world. But you know what, she is too good for this world. So comforting and inspiring

This was just okay. Hoping to see more development from Kel in the next book.

My second reading is just as fond as the first. The Protector of the Small series has aged well.

Audiobook.

This is my first Tamora Pierce novel, and I loved it! I'm so excited to read the rest of the series. I picked this one randomly because it was the first in a series available on audiobook when I was about to start a long drive, and I wasn't disappointed.

I wanted to hear more about the Lionness but I assume that's a different series and this is just an offshoot of it. I liked Kel a lot but I did feel like she was a little over the top sometimes with her sense of righteousness and taking on things much bigger than her while refusing all help. I felt like the book ended rather abruptly, but again it wasn't too surprising for a fantasy series that I knew had other installments. It was also pretty short.

A pretty traditional fantasy story about a girl being allowed (tentatively) to join the ranks of pages and study to be a knight. It reminded me a lot of Tom Brown's Schooldays with lots of young boy shenanigans and dealing with teasing and bullies. I want to see what else Pierce has out there!

The first book in a series that promises to be WOW !!
Although Alanna had paved the way, Keladry is the first girl to try training to become a knight. But between harassment, waking up at dawn, fighting in the corridors, intense training and a weapons master far from pleasant, Keladry is not out of the woods ...
The author's style is still very enjoyable to read (a lot of humor, action, suspense =D), the universe is further enriched in this book (I ABSOLUTELY want more details about the Yamaki culture !!! This mixture of Asian and Zen culture ... I LOVE it ><) and the plot and subplots promised to be SUPER AWESOME (I'm soo looking forward to see how Kel's training to become knight will be ><)
At first, I didn't know how I will feel about Kel. My only glimpse of her had been in the Trickster series through Aly's eyes and I have not felt a great curiosity toward this imposing knight. But ultimately, I was pleasantly surprised. Contrary to what one might think, Kel is not Alanna at all : she doesn't hide the fact that she is a girl, she's a real mix of different cultures, she has no magical powers or big quests intended and her family is fully behind her =D And we get quickly attached to her !! She is brave, strong, stubborn, funny but she still remains a girl like the others with her doubts and fears and I love her Yamaki side ><
I like the secondary characters that are pretty interesting, especially Neal but also Lord Wyldon, the Shang warriors and her family but unlike the other series in this universe, I have not had a big crush on one of secondary characters ... It might change in the future I hope =)
We saw again many old characters from previous books and it's nice to see how they grew up, but also how others perceive them : I loved the way Neal sees Numair as an old man xD and at the same time, I was surprised to see how Jonathan was perceived by Kel (She is very disappointed by him and I can understand that ...)
In short, I'm looking forward to read more =D

Give me a disadvantaged apprentice being picked on by a group of over entitled bullies and I'm hooked every single time (*cough Mercedes Lackey*).

Kel is the first girl to legitimately train to become a knight, but first faces a year of probation and during that year copes with all hazing given to first year pages along with the discrimination against women.

Like all Pierce female characters Kel is wildly talented to the point of being slightly unbelievable but luckily this brought back a notch by installing a few physical and personality quirks. I find Kel's personality much more engaging than Daine's thankfully, looking forward to the rest of the series.

Good series - Kel doesn't have any magical skill, so it's all about what she can learn n
