This was a beautiful and tragic story about the Phantom of the Opera. All he wanted was to feel love and accepted but the world shunned him and thought he was evil. He was so close to feeling accepted and love but it ended in tragedy. It reminded me so much of Frankenstein or Wuthering Heights. It also reminded me of Beauty and the Beast if it didn't have a happy ending. Although I enjoyed the tone and themes, it was kind of slow to get through because all all of the description and details. I've never seen the move or stage production. I can imagine it being better in a broadway show. Can't wait to watch it soon!

I am still contemplating my final evaluation for this gothic French classic. I thought I wasn’t going to like the book a few chapters in. But - once I embraced the operatic melodrama of it all, I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. One critique I wanted to make relates to the third person future retrospective on past events narration that Leroux goes with. It’s hard to show versus tell when characters are sharing about past events (it also removes tension when I know specific characters survive in the end). However, something about Leroux’s strategy/writing style makes me okay with this ultimate narration choice? It’s perplexing. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I still say the musical is superior!

I wanted to read this one for a long time, I'm sure it was on my list even when I was in school. Interesting read, to say the least!

I listened to this on audiobook, but if you’re looking for a good gothic story with a slightly forward thinking author, you should give this a go. I think it adds a lot more depth to the story than the musical ever could.

It’s quite slow I will admit and also the names r a bit confusing in the beginning but towards the end it’s easier to pick up/get it but once u get into it, it’s kinda impossible to stop like I was looking forward to read I will admit

The “torture” chamber and all that lake stuff was confusing cuz I get it was all in the opera but was likeee how big is this place and the stealing money I know they explained it well at the end but still I was thinking ummm that’s still questionable

But I suppose that’s the whole point to give Erik a sort of omnipresent feeling either way I enjoyed the book a lot.
Also saw someone mention the 2 owners were zesty and I 100% agree the naivety was sometimes frustrating but the were so dumb it was kinda funny especially when they arguing
