I found this while browsing Audible Plus and decided to give it a try based on the reviews. It was a cute story. There were times I thought the MC made some questionable choices (running off to a party with a guy she just met in a hotel bar, in a city she's never visited before, without getting the address so she can tell a friend?), but I was interested in how things would play out and I enjoyed the story and characters as a whole. I also really liked the narrator. I will definitely look for other books by Swendson in the future.

So this was a cute, light story. The plot itself is unique - wizardry folk living among non-wizardry New Yorkers. The main "conflict" being fought for in the story was "who" should govern the wizarding community.

I really loved Claire's personality. She was such a fun protagonist to follow along. I love her arc - starting out naive and then coming into her own and laying down the law!

The aspect I didn't quite like about this story was there was a lack of depth in terms of "why" holding the governing power was so important. And then the magical aspects weren't impactful enough. I wish the wizards described the spells more.

It was just fine. Utterly boring in the first half, but with a bit of a kick to the second half to keep me reading.

it was fluffy, and that’s what I wanted, so it lived up to my expectations!

It's cute, but not my favorite from this author. I prefer the Enchanted, Inc. series.

I found Claire to be a bit of a Mary Sue ... and I hate the term Mary Sue to my core. She was just *too* good.

The stakes in the book weren't nearly high enough. The climax was a bit of a letdown. Nothing bad *really* happens, and it all seems to work out too easily.

But, in the dumpster fire of 2020/2021, it's entertaining and light and I did like the characters and the story. So, there's that.

Audio book review.

This one had me a bit confused in the middle and wishing it was about 100 pages longer when it finished. I really enjoyed the ending, but the setup was odd and disjointed. I kept forgetting our leading lady was jilted at the altar and is on her honeymoon alone. Then suddenly she's not only a powerful magic user, but the ruler of all magic users, simply due to this amulet that was slipped into her pocket? One too many convenient coincidences for me, so it's not going to be one of my new favorites. However, I enjoyed myself while reading and would recommend for anyone looking for a good page-turner to spend the afternoon.

After Claire was jilted at the altar she ends up taking her New York City honeymoon by herself.
Spending he "honeymoon" doing all the activities meant for two by herself.
When suddenly a good deed she does on the streets results in Claire becoming the queen of all the wizards of New York.
Suddenly thrusted into a magical world's politics, Claire tries her best to find the rightful ruler before the end of her honeymoon.

This is a fairly light read.
Everything was relatively upbeat and the magic system was simple.
I personally was expecting a little more of a fluffy romance so I was shocked that
Spoiler it didn't happened till like the last few pages
.
The plot tied up nicely at the end.

I was still wondering a little at the end on why Gerald ended things and how exactly the magic system worked but it's a fairly straightforward book.
I also liked that there was a movement of self-awareness of how white most of the cast was when Claire met with Lancelot and his friends.

It's a cute book.
