4.5* for now.
A great ending to the Nightrunner series, which had become one of my favourite comfort reads.

Nightrunner has always been a more plot driven series - which might have lowered my rating, weren't these characters some of my fevourites in the gerne.
Alec and Seregil have been within the top3 of my OTPs for quite some times and this last book didn't change that.
This book is centered around the island of Kurous, recently reclaimed by the Skalans after the end of the war against Plenimaran. The last governour was murdered and their seemed to be magic involved. There are also other people dissapearing, ghosts, demons and deep, unsettling history.
At times this felt like a cozy mystery, at others like a gothic horror and then like a fever dream. That last part wasn's my favourite. Luckely, it wasn't too overpowering and truly, the characters carried even those parts of the book.

So, we have a last adventure with Alec, Seregil, Micum, Klia, Thero and Mika (who is the most adorable little wizard apprentice), with also made this feel a bit like a family vacation, as someone in the book (probably Seregil) calls it.
Despite this being again a standalone book in the overarching Nightrunner series, it definitely brought alot of closure with it as well. Full of call backs to previous adventures, wholesome little moments and bitter sweet finality, it truly felt like a good bye.

I'll miss my favourite nghtrunners with all my heart but I also know that I'll always be able to go back an reread all these books and meet Alec and Serigil, Nysander and Thero, and all the others again and see one of the ebst romances bloom again from the start.
A favourite series for sure.

So this is the end of the Nightrunner series. I cannot express how sad I am to see it end but I know like all great things it has to come to an end at some point. However, both Alec and Sergil will always stay alive in my heart as this series has become one of my all time favorites. It was a great finale for these series and the author did a great job at writing it. I actually felt spooked a few times while reading this book (especially when she was describing the chamber where they found the bodies maimed and the owl hung from the drapes... uhh spooky).
I really enjoyed the magical world that Lynn Flewelling has created. So interesting and full of wonder and unique concepts. I found the aspect of gods very interesting in this series. The author managed to make it sound so mysterious and so real. It really looked like Illior was guiding both Alec and Sergil on their nighrunning journeys and that the sacred four was looking after them. I can’t really explain it properly but the concept of the “higher power” felt so tangible. From my experience, in many books god is usually either a concept to whom people pray but doesn’t really express itself or a more of a person (even if a very powerful one) where it speaks with people and then becomes too much “human like”. But here it was in the perfect middle, a force, a protector and a guiding hand.
Otherwise my most favorite part was of course Sergil and Alec *fangirly screeching*. They are just perfect together. I loved their relationship so much. Father, brother friend and a lover - it described them perfectly and it warmed my heart every time I read how much Sergil cares about Alec. When I think about them in Luck in The Shadows I realize how far they have come. Alec a scared boy who Sergil found in the dungeon and Sergil a lovely but very lonely faie who turned out to be a very loyal and dedicated lover and a friend.
About the book itself. The Shards of Time was very good. It had quite a few good horror moments and (*spoilers* when Alec and Sergil were hacking up the dyrmagnos into pieces I could help but cheer them on). The only complaint I really had is that Sergil and Alec didn’t spend that much time in this book together but I guess they don’t have to be constantly attached at the hip. Overall, a very good addition to the Nightrunner series and a great finale.

It's like a warm and fuzzy feeling finishing off the Nightrunner series, nothing truly of consequence happens to our heroes but it feel like one last huzzah and chance to play with the beloved characters.

I remember having to order the original trilogy from Amazon because they weren't in print in Australia! What a thrill to see slash characters in print, so natural. I've loved this series for years, and so am sad to see them go but thank them for the memories.

I’m holding out hope that one day Flewelling will write more books following Alec and Seregil. I enjoyed this one, but I felt it was lacking in the character department in favor of the plot.

The end of a journey! I absolutely adored this series from beginning to end. Everything that happened between Seregil & Alec was a joy to experience. Their friendship, the love & passion that developed between them, and all the adventures they jumped into. They fought necromancers, demons & ghosts. They were poisoned, beaten, and killed. They thwarted a dark god of death, stopped a political coup, aided the end of war & even managed to undo the start of a plague! So much happened in this series more than I can fit into this review, it was exhilarating & wild but had its tragic moments too.

This last book in the series gave me a taste of the future while settling the past. I wanted it to be longer and go on for hours. My only critique is that it was over too soon and I want nothing more than a secret 8th book to pop up magically in the near future.

The only thing I can really say is Luck in the shadows… and in the light.

This book was so good!! A great end to a great series that really brought so many things full circle. However, it is still the end so I'm sad that it's over. I've been living with this series and these characters for quite a long time and, since I can't say goodbye, I will definitely be re-reading it many more times through.
