Pure nightmare fuel. I wasn't crazy about this one but I have to give it at least three (3 1/2?) stars for the artwork.

As for the story, well, it was certainly challenging, you have to say that much for it. A bunch of adorable little pixie people are living happy little pixie lives (we're only given a glimpse of this, so it's not really clear what normal looks like for them; were they born in there or what?) when their society suddenly starts to...shall we say...rapidly decay.

While the main character tries to keep up moral and busies herself finding food for everyone, things turn bad very quickly. Not in a Lord of the Flies, people becoming violent out of fear kind of way, but in a way that is even more disturbing, as the majority of these cute little people begin to display a sociopathic indifference to each others plight. One reviewer compared the sense of random cruelty, irrationality, and indifference to Alice in Wonderland, which is a good description, though the affect is far more alarming here, as this attitude is allowed to play out to its natural conclusion over and over again, with horrifying results.

The point of the story seems to be "No, the world is actually horrible. People. Nature. Everything. Just horrible." I could see morbid teens who are only just realizing how crappy the world can be loving this book but as a jaded adult, idk, it felt a little self indulgent? Or just a little repetitive? Freaking beautiful art though and I do have to appreciate that fact that this writer pulled no punches.

Tiny creatures live at the edge of a forest where a horrible thing has happened. Can they thrive, or does the fact of the act foretell their doom? Told through a series of connected vignettes.

This story is dark, violent—both passively and actively—creepy AF, and everyone in it is pretty awful. I know it is an allegory for something (greed?), but I didn’t enjoy reading it much. Parts reminded me of Thumbelina. I hate Thumbelina. In the book’s defense, it’s a reference I should’ve gleaned from the cover, so this one’s on me.

 It is beautifully drawn.

dark fast-paced

The art is beautiful and the story is certainly original. But, it goes too dark too fast, and I don’t love it. It has a demented charm to it, right up until it loses any sort of positivity. Definitely took some strange turns. 2.5 stars.
