Firstly: in many ways, this is the most gory book I’ve ever read. If I believed that the kinds of people who report books and get them restricted at libraries read literary fiction, I’d say it’s only a matter of time until this gets banned. It is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison — but the fact that American Psycho is restricted in Australia and this book is just out there on the shelf… wild and inconsistent.

The things I liked: This book didn’t shy away from the brutality of its subject matter. The morally unreliable narrator. The concept of this dystopia. The “twist” ending. How wonderfully disturbing it all was. The way Bazterrica highlights the use of language to normalise and desensitise the public to horrific acts.

The things I liked less:
The exposition dumps — Bazterrica is a sucker for telling not showing.
The world did feel somewhat underdeveloped. It felt like it lacked a real thematic through line — the cannibalism needs to be a commentary on something, whether it be the meat industry, environment, class, or something else. And it didn’t feel like the author knew exactly what she wanted to say.
At times it felt like the author had a collection of cool vignettes in mind, all placed in this same dystopia, but didn’t have the story or thematic backbone to bring them together.

Overall, I liked this book and would probably recommend it — it was an interesting read. Just maybe skip it if you have thin skin.

I was not expecting the ending. I wasn’t expecting anything that occurred in this book. As a fan of true crime, I thought I could handle pretty much anything. But wow, this book was the right amount of dystopian horror show normalized in such a way it kept my stomach aching throughout.
I can’t say I liked it because, well, that would be really messed up.
But I’ll say the person who wrote this has an incredibly creative and disturbing mind. I pray that nothing the author wrote in this book ever comes to pass.

This book is a book of warning that everyone should read.  It is intense, and in second person, but feels like a cautionary tale!

I feel like it attempted to draw a line between what defines humans and other animals. Humans are more sentient and able to experience more complex thought, but by consequence deviate from the innate blank slate and develop nuanced emotions and motives. Animals, not capable of as much sentient thought are defined by having more innate and “natural” feelings that can be interpreted as seen at face value. Such as Tejo, who you could feel empathy for his misanthropic views but you see he is still susceptible to flaws of characters and judgement as given his power dynamic of Jasmine and her death. While the example of animals is given as Jasmine and the puppies, who are portrayed as simpler but more pure.

Also I really didn’t think the world building clicked, they say you need meat in the book to love but they feed grain to the stock humans and they live sooo..

So I guess everyone is just a cannibalistic freak by nature or the society in this books lacks critical thinking skills as a whole, but who am I to complaint about the world building of a book about government sanctioned cannibalism.

There’s a lot said about this book, and I’d say much of it is true. It’s incredibly dark, very hard to read without feeling some of the hopelessness of it all. It’s also very well written, and the author describes some ephemeral sensations — dreams, grief, hateful indifference — in ways that I found immediately relatable.

I do want to address the plot briefly by saying that this isn’t some romance or a series of character interactions, both of which were implied by the people that recommended it to be. It’s really a book about a man’s self-destructive spiral and a series of vignette-like explorations of the book’s premise. Society’s willingness to attach to a veneer if it satisfies their desires is a big theme.
