The age of the characters really shines through in the narrative. You can tell Balen is a 23 year old guy with a massive responsibility thrust on his shoulders and oh boy does he act with the aloofness and ego of a 23 year old. Zavrius was a silly guy but i felt like his characterization was teeter tottering back and forth and was never landed on. Overall a fun story with not super high stakes imo, good audio book!

This is a great book for people who like queer high fantasy with no diversity. It is basically Lord of the Rings level of whiteness.
The worldbuilding is oftentimes confusing, complete with plenty of fantasy names that will have you scratching your head trying to keep up. Zavrius has the power of… I don’t know… lute harp magic (???), which none of the other magical people have. Weirdly convenient and fitting.
There are some lovable side characters and decent fight scenes. I actually did enjoy Zavrius’s plot development in the end. But I probably won’t read the sequels in this series.

Che dire, non era il libro che mi aspettavo, ma non è stato neppure terribile. Una piacevole serata di lettura.
Mentre ho apprezzato il WB e la storia nella sua interezza, Balen è tra i meno interessati protagonisti che ho letto nell'ultimo periodo e soprattutto tra i meno competenti per essere il super-figo-paladino-guerriero che la storia mia dice essere.
Non ha una grande profondità, con l'apparente conflitto tra "la carriera" e "l'aMMore" che mi lascia perplessa - soprattutto dopo il finale e (view spoiler) - e in generale non ho sentito molto la chimica tra lui e Zav trovando quindi la love story il punto più debole della storia.
Inoltre, per essere una knight/liege romance c'è veramente poca devozione e uso del fatto che sono in questa dinamica di potere, per via del fatto che sono ex e lo erano quando Zav era il principe dimenticato. Quindi yeah, se siete qui per la knight/liege dinamica, è più un tizi che erano ex e ora sono all'avventura insieme che altro.
Non mi è dispiaciuto nella sua interezza, soprattutto l'ultimo terzo è stato particolarmente godibile, quindi probabilmente leggerò altri libri della stessa serie visto che sono standalone. (less)

I wish I had read this physically, as I struggle with audiobooks sometimes. I would have found a map helpful and got some side characters mixed up.
Other than that i LOVED this!!! Second-chance romance between a king and his paladin.

This was fun :) Enough political intrigue to keep me hooked, fun sex scenes. I think an editor should have gone through this one more time for some grammar/spelling things that felt way to common for a published book. Zavrius is a really fun character with a lot of layers I think, I enjoyed how he felt more complex than Balen. I'm excited for the sequels and to get more details about the world. One point, I desperately need a better map. This map in this book is NOT helpful. "The royal highway is important" it's not on the map. Details about mountains? Barely there. Please god give me a better map.
