I had no idea what this book would be about. I've never listened to their podcast, but a friend recommended I check this out and OH BOY. These two are the voice of a feminist generation (across generations). This book was part self-help, part memoir, and part feminist manifesto all rolled into one. It was hilarious, heartfelt, and uplifting. So well written, and well read (I listened to the audiobook).

I'm an avid MFM listener and the way this was written felt like Karen and Georgia were sitting in my living room telling me their stories. While we get snippets of their lives on the podcast, the book expanded on those (in)famous stories they've told us and gave us some new ones, making K&G even more relatable than they already are. This was a very informal, quick read - perfect for something light before bed.

“Politeness doesn’t require actual humanity. It’s just cultural ritual...Politeness is fancy curtains in your front window. Kindness is the home-cooked meal on your dinner table.” - Karen Kilgariff

Stay Sexy Don’t Get Murdered written by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, the hosts of the hit My Favorite Murder podcast, is a collection of personal essays all loosely structured around some of their famous catchphrases such as, “You’re in a cult. Call your dad.” This book reads less like a work of true crime, and more like a handwritten letter to all of the faithful murderinos at there. It is an honest look into the lives of two incredibly empowering, badass women who provide a gentle nudge to the readers to live their lives authentically, to not spend their precious time on this earth working hard to please others, to trust their intuitions, and most importantly to fuck politeness.

SSDGM was the self-help book I didn’t know I needed. I am so in awe of Georgia and Karen and their ability to bare their souls and be completely vulnerable. I ugly sobbed through quite a few chapters, especially the chapter where Karen discusses her late mother’s battle with alzheimers, and Georgia’s chapter on how Ray Bradbury saved her life and inspired her to get her nipple pierced. I am an incredibly anxious person, and I CONSTANTLY overwork myself to make others happy at the expense of my own mental health, and I desperately needed some words of tough love from two women I admire pretty vehemently. I am actively inspired to loosen my deadly grip around the vial that is politeness.

If you are a fan of the MMF podcast, and have not read SSDGM yet, I highly encourage you to check it out!

5 out of 5 stars.

My favorite quote was by Georgia saying, “Point being, you don’t have to bound into every situation ready to kick ass, you just have to show up, and once you’re there, you might as well do your best. But fuck it all if you think I’m not taking a nap afterward.”

I am the first person to admit that my obsession with true crime is a bit extreme and that my love of all things mystery, murder and crime is probably not the best thing for my psyche at time but, hey, it’s my thing. Apparently it is many other people’s “thing” as well seeing as how popular the podcast by the two authors has become and how they published a book about their lives. This isn’t the normal book you’ll see on our blog but as it was one of my most looked forward to and important reads of 2019 here I am reviewing it. Okay? Let’s dive in.

This book is a dual memoir between Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, the hosts of my favorite podcast My Favorite Murder. In case you can’t tell by the title of the podcast this is a true crime murder podcast. What you can’t tell from the title alone is that Karen and Georgia blend their love of true crime with their other love and coping mechanism, comedy. A strange mix indeed but as Karen says at the start of each live performance “If you don’t like it you can get the f*** out.”

A little brash? Maybe. But ya know what, the combination of two friends talking about cases that interest them, their humor (usually self-deprecating in nature and never about the victims of the crimes they discuss) is a good way to break up the monotony of the day to day world.

While this book doesn’t get into the true crime aspect like their podcast, except to talk about their love of it, we do get to learn more about these two women who are so open and honest, both in podcast and book form, that you feel as though you know them and that they understand you.

The duo touch on a variety of topics in their book (depression, anxiety, loss, eating disorders and addiction) but they also impart some knowledge by telling us of times they messed up. Their vulnerability in this book should be applauded and I can’t help but love them all the more for it.

Signing off on this I’ll finish the review how these two finish each episode; Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered!

Get a job, own your own shit, stay out of the forest.

These women have gotten me through so much and it's been an honor to see them evolve over the last seven years.

I hope one day they make the decision to go on tour again, as I never saw them during their initial run.
