I thought this book was pretty unusual, not your typical spy novel. It was more character-driven than most, but there were plenty of twists and turns and intrigue to keep it interesting.
Milo Weaver, the main character, is a former "tourist", a secret group that travels a lot doing black op jobs for a secret US government agency, perhaps the CIA. I forget, but it doesn't matter except to those that care, like other secret agencies. Mainly, they're all spies.
The book starts with Milo in a gunfight, lying low but tempted to just stand up and get shot. He's tired of it all, and dying sounds like as good a solution as any, since it's not easy to just quit and live to a ripe old age when you know too many secrets. Milo has a wife and daughter that he cares about, so he is trying to retire, but that wouldn't make for a very good story, so of course, he can't.
Most of the book is concerned with trying to figure out who are the good guys, and who are not so good. Nobody seems to know, least of all me. I'm still not 100% sure, so I'm moving right on to the next book to see if I can figure out what's happening. I've already read a little, and it starts out pretty good, with many of the same people and concerning the same operation, it seems.

Good, classic spy story, less cerebral that what I am used to, which is a good thing.
It was an okay spy novel. I don't know if the problem was that I was busy so took a long time to read it or it was just okay. Enjoyable but I wouldn't rush out to buy. (Also not the same plot as the fairly current movie of the same name w/ Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp...)
For a spy-genre novel, the characters were pretty darn chatty, and truthful. It seemed to be a decent story to start off a series. I see now that there is a sequel, though I don't feel strongly compelled to seek it out.

2020 Re-read update: Still a great book 10 years after I first read it! One quick observation: WTF Milo killed Brano Sev?! The first time I read this the name was just one among many in a book. Since then I read the whole 5-book Yalta Boulevard series and Brano is, well, Brano. Very cool dropping him in The Tourist.
Thought it was very good. Twists and turns here and there and each chapter left you wanting more. The ending was a little disappointing, but perhaps more realistic than the fairy tale ending I would have liked.

This weekend my friend Sarah mentioned that we spend our adult lives searching for books that captivate and absorb us the way our childhood books did. I thought about that idea after I stayed in bed this morning to finish The Tourist. In this case though I was trying to find another great spy novel like my all-time favorite, The Bourne Identity. Although not as spectacular as that book, I thoroughly enjoyed this modern spy novel. For anyone sad that the traditional spy novel of the cold war is gone, look no further. Steinhauer has now written two books about Milo Weaver, CIA agent extraordinaire. Great beach read.
"To the Tourist, success and failure are handed out in equal measure. to the Tourist, successes and failures all the same things-jobs completed".
Its good to pick up a spy-thriller again after a few months of not reading it. It started slow and boring. I almost dnf somewhere around 200 pages. But I am glad I carried on to find the the story is picking up after around 300 pages and has been very enjoyable towards the end.
I just realised this is the first book in the series. I can live with reading it as a standalone, but I am kinda interested to know the sequel because I am getting a vibe of Tina being a spy herself.
I am torn in between to look for the sequel or just forget about it and read the spoilers instead as I am afraid that the story would repeat itself (the boring 300 pages read). ughhh. but if I found the sequel with a bargain, I might buy it.
