This book was a re-read for me. Last year I read this book and gave it a 5 stars, it was a very different time in my life. When I first read it, it felt like someone took my thoughts and put it in a book. I’ve never related more to a character like Tori when I read this book in high school. But upon my re-read I am in a lot healthier of a place and that made this very hard for me to read. It made me think about the unhealthy place I was when I first read it, and it’s a really hard to read about a character that is self-destructing. It’s a very beautiful story and helped me a lot when I was going through a hard time, but I’ve moved on.

Tori Spring enjoys blogging and lying in her bed. She's been through a lot with troubles with her brother, and now she's facing her a-levels. What's more is there is a weird blog been set up, Solitaire, at her school. Will Tori learn to care about her new classmates, and will they find the answer to what Solitaire is up to?
There is a lot about trauma and depression throughout this book, and it is really well represented how this may display in teenagers, and there is a lot of self deprecating humour and references to suicide. But it doesn't feel too heavy still, its hopeful overall, and an enjoyable read.
You can tell this came out eleven years ago, and it is very nostalgic of my times in sixth form. The amount of people who have blogs just isn't the same anymore, but despite the key elements being a little old, it still translates well into modern times. I can't believe Osman was only 17 when she wrote it - a fantastic debut novel, and its unsurprising it reads very much like a stream of consciousness of a real seventeen year old.
Would really recommend and its nice to see Nick and Charlie from heartstopper pop up thoughout the book!

Yeah idk this book wasn’t it for me. Making my way through the Oseman backlog and starting here and I guess I liked that it gave some more context and info on characters so I’m not mad I read it but 1) I know Tori is a depressed teenager but I didn’t love her narration / pov, 2) I didn’t really see that much character growth for how much growing they had to do, 3) it all just escalated….really quickly like the last 30 pages I was just like what, and 4) idk is Tori going to get the help and support and resources she needs? It ends a bit “hopeful” but I don’t really think I felt that and was more so just like worried and that it seems like this is a recipe for a v codependent and bad relationship between Michael and Tori. Impressive that Alice wrote it when they were 17 and everything I’ve read later from them I’ve liked much more but yeah not my fave and I def have a few issues w it.

I absolutely adored this! I love seeing further into this “universe” of stories. Tori is one of my all time favorite characters now. I found the representation of her thoughts and feelings to be comforting in a way. It can be difficult to realize, but there is always, always a reason to keep going. :)

It's easy to say this is not a love story.
