The setting and world-building are great. The main characters are insufferable. Mac is vain and obnoxious. She complains about being a Barbie stereotype but literally acts like a caricature of one. And Jericho is just a jerk who never explains anything but gets upset when Mac doesn't listen. I could go on, but plenty of other review have beaten this dead horse, so I won't. I'll give the series another book or two to see if it improves, just because the story is interesting.

3.49. I really really wanted to give it four stars.

I will probably keep reading this series as long as I can get the books from the library, but, despite the good rating on here, I found this book kind of boring. It picked up a bit (when I hit Ch 4 I gave myself one more chapter to enjoy myself before putting it down) but never became something I couldn't put down. Maybe it read too much like the introduction to a long series? With the prologue I thought much more would be covered in the book - but the prologue is a prologue for the whole series, I guess, and not just the first book.

LOL to my current self coming on goodreads to give this a DNF in 2022.

2017 Review

I'm so happy I decided to reread this series before I finished the books I never got around to! Truly captivating! Like I can't even put these books down! On to the next one :)

I started reading this series because I needed like a legit good Fae read. This was pretty good and I feel like it stuck to like the lore of the Fae. This gave off True Blood vibes to me so much! Especially the further I got with Barrons and V'lane.

Short & Sweet: I don’t get what the hoopla was about this book. One of my pet peeves where a character says in narration that the “meaning of this event would come clear later” happens numerous times in this book. Unfortunately I would prefer to have my nearly 9 hours back instead of having read this book but I’m obviously in the minority.

I purchased Darkfever and nothing else was exchanged for my honest review.

This was fun, if a bit silly. The writing was immature at times, but fit the voice of a 22 year-old pretty well. I liked the world-building and the fast-paced storytelling, and Mac grew on me over time. She was still dumb in many ways, but at least she realized it. Had to roll my eyes at the heavy use of foreshadowing. It’s a useful tool that’s best used sparsely, not twice per chapter. And there were way too many happy coincidences to be believable, but whatever, at least it moved the story along. Some other parts I snorted at in disbelief: Mac rushes to Ireland in a grief-stricken, vengeance-driven panic, but packs dozens of super cute, glamorous outfits, including at least 8 pairs of completely impractical heels? The Shades attacked the mobsters, supposedly in complete darkness, but the vehicle doors were open - most cars have lights that stay on while the doors are open. There were a few idiosyncrasies concerning Irish/US-American customs that didn’t bother me overly much, but I really didn’t need 15 wordy descriptions of Mac’s pedicure du jour. I still enjoyed it, but I hope the following books in the series read a little more maturely.
