I am definitely not a fan of this author's writing style. The style just was really slow and boring...maybe too much of the character, Mac, thinking about the same things and not enough action to carry the plot. It was really off-putting to me and failed to suck me into the world of the book despite all the author's world building.

Mac wasn't a very likable heroine either. A shallow, princess-y, 22 year old girl who just grated on my nerves. I did not like the main male character, Barrons, either. The book hints at this story involving lots of sex in the future...and possibly between the two main characters...but I don't think it would be hot. Barrons is not sexy to me and all the calling him "sexual" by the author doesn't change that fact. Show don't say that he is sexy or sexual. She failed to show how he was sexy so that fell flat.

I would have actually preferred to read a book about Mac's dead sister Alina. She seemed to have a well rounded life and to have been smart and likable. Unlike Mac who is shallow, bratty, and stupid.

I am not going to continue to read this series because nothing in this book caught my interest enough to keep me reading it. Too bad really since so many people I know recommended it to me and told me it was one of the better Fae story line books. I guess I will continue my search for a good Fae world series.

I liked this way more than I remembered. The main character is incredibly annoying, but in a funny way? I can't decide if the author made her intentionally unlikeable or not. But she is amusing to read and the book ends on a cliffhanger that means I'll definitely be picking up the sequel.

So far, a fun, good read. I'm reading at the strong encouragement of my daughter AND my husband, and I've told them I sure hope she's done describing her pink nail polish and lacy camisoles soon. Wanted to give this book four stars because of the way they've raved, but the fashion comments have put me off a bit; hubby says they serve a purpose. We'll see.

I've been hearing about this series for awhile and after a slow start, which I'll admit was b/c of my initial dislike of the southern valley-girl heroine, but she and the story both grew on me. Eros and Thanatos combined indeed.

Yeah, I'm not going to waste any more time on this book. Here's an idea for authors: If you're thinking about giving your protagonist a love interest, don't make him the guy who by 1/4 of the way into the book has bruised her ribs so badly it hurts to wear a bra, choked her more than once, picked her up by her hair and continuously called her an idiot and talked down to her. This isn't mysterious. It's not sexy. It's just irresponsible and it ruins the rest of your book for readers who are put off by abusive relationships. I don't usually write angry reviews or give out one stars but this is a sensitive issue to me. Stop romanticising abusive relationships, please!

Extremely entertaining...grips you and pulls you in from the first chapter. Very good escapism , quick read. Can't wait to start book 2 tomorrow and pick up where this left off....definitely a must read...fast read. Enjoy!!

Incredible world building! The characters and settings were beautifully written. While I did feel at times the story stretched, I did appreciate the fact that Darkfever was setting the scene for the series, which I absolutely intend to read in full.

MacKayla is a reluctant heroine and her development is slow, but that is to be expected. Not only does she have to come to terms with her sister’s death, which occurred in a completely different country from her own, but she also has to deal with the fact that she has powers that allow her to see a world that very few knew existed.

Jericho Barrons is complex and intoxicating, mentoring MacKayla one minute, then using her the next. I appreciate the air of mystery surrounding his character, and admit it is the main reason I will be reading on. A dark and powerful start to a series I look forward to completing.

So this was a harder re-read for me in some aspects than I expected it to be. I still loved the story and reading this one definitely reminded me off all the things I've forgotten about this series. Things that are probably really important to remember if I'm going to actually finish the series. But man did I dislike Mac in this! She's such a ditsy, me focused, ignore sensible information because it doesn't jive with what she wants, obnoxious piece of work in this story. And I guess as a character arc over the course of the series it actually works, because I know she does get better. But she's so young and sure she knows everything in this one and yet isn't willing to accept that she doesn't know much of anything even with the reality is slapping her in the face. I'm surprised she wasn't killed outright in this one at some points.

This does give us a sneakily good introduction into all of the things that are going on in this world though. The world building is definitely one of the strengths of this series. I love the descriptions of the fae and the way certain parts of the city are just disappearing. There's a lot of information we learn and while he's a dick, Jericho is my type of dick. He really doesn't have the patience to deal with some ditsy American pink princess when his world is such a dark place. But I will give Mac this, she does have hutzpah. She doesn't give up and even when I wanted to punch her she's still determined to figure things out.

God I’ll read some bad books but this one was really something. Dnf. Listen I can get past the bad writing, horribly annoying main character and out of touch cultural reference points. But how can one book have so many problematic offhand comments.

This was so offensive to so many people- my jaw was dropped reading so many of the mc internal remarks. I’m told the character has a massive arc in the later books and it all gets better so I won’t give it 1 star but I feel if you missed reading this I’m the early 2000s you’re going to find it just as intolerable.
