This was definitely an intriguing read. With the way it ended, I was definitely ready to move along to the second book.
I found a certain kinship with Mac and her stubbornness. Jericho is certainly a male character that I want to know more about, so many secrets to uncover about him. Then there is V'lane. That's one Fae that I wouldn't mind having around, at all. One word: museum.
This is a series I can see myself getting quickly enthralled by, which is great!

adventurous
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
The book really picked up towards the end and I enjoyed how the main character really came into her own. I admit, at first I wasn't really sure about Mac or the relationship between Mac/Jericho, simply because Jericho tended to always talk down to her...but then at the end when he called her "Mac", I think that his cold, calculated demeanor is just pretty much how he relates to everyone...but now he's starting to become attached to Mac which he never does. I have my theories about who he really is and what his real deal is and I can't wait to find out.
It got a bit better toward the end and everyone loves the series as a whole so I will pick up the next book but this was pretty tedious. I hated the retrospective voice...the ominous prologue was a good but the body of the book became this weird mix of voices--battle seasone future Mac vs grieving, confused and disbelieving past Mac and the foreshsdowing the former provided was irritating while slogging through the disbelief and clunky exposition that was the later's introduction to the Faerie underworld. Moning often broke away from a scene in its most interesting moments, eschewing meaningful descriptions for an offhand fourth wall comment from Mac "I won't bore you..." But her grief for her sister would have been compelling had it not been waved away with a "you dont get it unless you've felt it." A statement which is undoubtedly true, but explaining the experience to is part of literature. Same goes for some of the monsters she encountered. We don't want to break action up too much but I don't feel the fear and urgency of a situation unless I can understand what it is that she is facing. All of this combined to leave me feeling disconnected and uninterested in the plight and action of the story, so--though this was a good idea for a series I will give one more book to get its feet properly under it--I was pretty bored and overall unimpressed.
The plot really held onto me, refusing to let go. In terms of characters, romance, and world building, Moning set up a framework that has left me entranced, dying for more. I cannot wait to see where this series goes.
The main character is completely insufferable. Judgmental, vain, mean and rude. Hope that improves in the next book.
Something quick to fly through between big chunky Malazan bois to clear my pallet. If you like faeries and the typical urban fantasy cliches it'll be right up your alley. I grew up reading a lot of urban fantasy so it's a comfort genre for me at least. Enjoyable enough I'll read the next one for sure when I need something quick to read. I did like the MC well enough despite the cliches (ugh "loves to eat, but it doesn't show" fuck you, I love to eat and it shows. She doesn't exercise so big doubt there.) Who even knows who the love interest(s) is/are at this point, thankfully we were spared sex scenes. Like I said all and all decent urban fantasy.
Great paranormal book! Would have given it five stars if not for the ZERO cock count! Can't call this book a romance yet because there was no romance, but story is excellent!
Okay so this was fun and I devoured it in 2 sittings. I’ve heard such great things about this series and finally decided to dive in! I know this was written in the early 2000’s and even though it’s an urban paranormal romance/fantasy it lacks things like modern cell phones and social media, which I actually really like. I like the nostalgia of disposable cameras, basic cell phones, email as communication, and early 2000’s fashion lol
This is definitely a slowwwww burn—pretty much nothing happens romantically in this book. It definitely has a really strong plot apart from the romance. There’s a murder mystery, a search for magical artifacts, and a whole lot of “who do I trust?” This book was pretty action-packed, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the plot/romance continue to develop in subsequent books!
The FMC Mac is pretty insufferable in this, but she’s also funny so I can let it slide. I’m still not quite sure how I feel about (who I’m assuming is) the MMC, Jericho. I just don’t feel like I got to know him well enough in this installment to form an opinion. He’s definitely all kinds of mysterious
Anyways I’m off to start book 2!! Hoping this series utterly consumes me bc I’ve missed having a series like that

Forgot this one in my last batch of reviews.
A little reminiscent of [b:Enchanted, Inc.|603398|Enchanted, Inc. (Enchanted, Inc., #1)|Shanna Swendson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388469170l/603398._SY75_.jpg|589968] - a sweet naive protagonist is thrust into a magical world. But this is much, much darker. An interesting premise, and no romance where it was expected, which I appreciated.
I did *not* like the protagonist much - she starts out and a willfully oblivious idiot, but I was drawn in enough to read book two.
