Once again, I fall into the trap of the cover buy. This book is BEAUTIFUL. Too bad that's the best part of the book.
What was the point of this book? This is science fiction! That means the science should be interesting! But this book was just so boring and mundane. And the science really wasn't accurate. Why was she in space? She doesn't know what she's doing. That makes her a safety risk. So much time was spent on completely pointless things. The cafeteria at the school, making friends, classes. All of it was pointless. There was even a part about brushing her teeth, but not in a cool, science-y way you'd have to do in space.
Also, for the LOVE OF GOD. WHY ARE THERE NO QUOTATION MARKS??

June is fascinated with her uncle’s work on fuel cells built for space machines. After he passes away, she carries her fascination on and attends the prestigious space education school near her adopted home. Eventually she ends up in space and crosses paths with some of her uncle’s original team. When a crew on mission goes missing, she is determined to figure out what happened to them, though some do not share her determination. A strange blend of romance, science-fiction, and space fantasy, the story jumps around a bit. There are some unexplained plot holes and odd character twists that make for some bumpy storytelling.
A great story and I'm glad I didn't stay away on account of the jacket blurb and reference to " a fiery love affair that threatens a rescue mission".
That was such a small part of the book for it to be leading the jacket description.
A fascinating account of a possible astronaut program, and a young (on the spectrum, in my opinion) girl as she makes her way through it.
Loved it, highly recommended

This book wasn't a traditional romance - so the description was a little misleading.
I could not put this book down. INTO THE QUICK reads like an intense space movie and a poem all in one. June is such a likable character and it is not often we get to view the world of space exploration through the eyes of a woman. There is a lot of science language and engineering terms in the book, however, there aren't so many that the reader is confused or becomes disengaged in the work. I absolutely would recommend this book to a friend.
Thanks to Random House for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Like <>The Martian>, this is a story of engineering problem solving in space. The mood, however, is completely different - heavy and dark throughout the whole book. Regardless, it's a fascinating story of a brilliant young astronaut. Reader will be rooting for June the whole way through as she proves her skill and insight time and again.
They say don’t judge a book by its cover. Well, this book has a beautiful cover, but the praise ends there. This novel has been likened to both The Martian and Jane Eyre, perhaps that was by someone who dislike both. There are things reminiscent of The Martian, if you disregarded all science. Almost all of the sci-fi elements seem unrealistic and not well researched, and that flaw is not rescued by character development, sadly. Too much of the novel is spent when the protagonist is a child—almost half—then there’s an abrupt transition to her as adult on the verge of a romantic relationship. It’s a hard pivot that could have been done more gracefully, especially because there was room in the first half of the novel to trim a lot of superfluous detains and get us closer to the action in the story.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a chance to read this book before it was released. This in no way affects my thoughts or opinions

That was.... average. There were some good things and there were some bad things.
First the good: I happen to be a reader that really enjoys books set in space or about space (which is really ironic considering my crippling fear of outer space). So this was really up my alley and if you happen to enjoy that sort of content then I say check it out. I don't know how best to articulate this but there was just something about the writing or the character's thought process that felt so simple and clean. It was very easy to read and that made it so enjoyable. It felt kind of analytical and that's how I view the world a lot of times so it was like reading myself in this situation.
The bad: There is almost no world-building. Sometimes books can get away with that and be fine but this could have benefitted from a little bit of backstory about this Pink Planet that is so crucial to their solar system and space travel. Also, a lot of the "conflict" presented felt forced and like it was just included to further the plot. I also, at one point, was reading a conflict scene and really thought to myself, "How did we get here?" I truly had no idea how we were led to this scene and that could just be me but it's still concerning.
For readers of this book, I would say that you should go into it with low expectations. Not saying its bad but don't read the synopsis and think that is exactly what you're getting.
