Given that three-quarters of this books I had to read to my class via Microsoft Teams, I'm not entirely sure how they've taken it. So I'm just going to assume they all love it as much as me and want to name any children, they may or may not choose to have, Carrie.

This was one of my favourite books when I was younger and was so happy to find it had been kept and was in my parents loft.

Carrie and her brother Nick are sent to a Welsh mining village during the war. They are put with Mr Evans, who runs the grocers, and his sister Louisa. Whilst trying to keep Mr Evans happy they also spend time at Druids Bottom.

I really enjoyed reading this again. It makes you realise how children interpret things differently to adults. The only thing that stopped it being a 5 star is I feel like it just ends so abruptly, when it could have carried on to see what happened.

An absolute delight to read. The story seeped into my bones and I felt I was there in the valleys with them.

hen it narrates the narrative of Carrie and her younger brother Nick, who were evacuated to Wales during the war in the mid-1940s. Carrie and Nick are only a year and a half apart in age, but you'd think there'd be a wider gap because Nick is rather immature and naive, and Carrie is closer to puberty than he is. Auntie Lou, one of their foster carers, is kind, but her controlling and devoutly religious older brother Mr Evans is a nasty, dictatorial old grouch, so Nick is understandably lonely at first.

I do enjoy a good children's classic. I was apparently one of the few British children never to have read this, but I did really like it. I really appreciated the qualities Carrie had and her empathy towards others, which I feel is a very important lesson to teach children. A very sweet and pleasant read with some dark undertones I thoroughly enjoyed.
