There has been a body dug out of a bog on the island of Lewis, hence the title. this story follows the main characters' search for the murderer and the discovery behind their true family history. Thought-provoking and told in part from the memories of the father of one of the main characters.

I liked the first book in this series better, but this one still had some of the same elements that I enjoyed previously. I like the main character, Fin, who seems like an honorable person with some issues. I also like the setting which feels like a harsh place to live which explains why so many of the characters have a toughness to them.

What I didn't like so much this time was the use of flashbacks to tell almost 1/2 the story. I would have preferred to keep Fin as the main focus. I also wasn't crazy about the ending, which was a little too over-the-top and also abrupt. It could've used another chapter or two to wrap things up.

I would try another book in the series but I'm hoping that the next one lightens up a little. I wouldn't call this a grim book, but it resembled the rainy, windy weather that was common in the story.

I really loved [b:The Blackhouse|10305247|The Blackhouse (Lewis Trilogy, #1)|Peter May|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328052791s/10305247.jpg|7307773], the first book in this trilogy, for its emotional truth and attention to building characters. I think of it as a literary mystery, which I describe as character- rather than plot-driven.

Mr. May's handling here of a character with dementia (in the first person, no less!) was very well done. Maybe because [b:The Lewis Man|12782865|The Lewis Man (Lewis Trilogy, #2)|Peter May|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328645011s/12782865.jpg|17929545] is split between his story and that of the characters from The Blackhouse, it just didn't go as deeply in either direction.

I had very high expectations of this book after reading the Blackhouse, the book before this one in the trilogy. It was also incredibly written, with the same engaging characters and incredible landscapes. The story was sad and tragic, but it was an incredible journey with a heartwarming ending.

A superb recommendation this. Very well written and amazingly atmospheric. At one point I thought it was losing its focus but it all worked out true to the very complex plot in the end. Very different to anything else in its field.
