This really a novel about people and place, in this case the Outer Hebrides islands in Scotland, rather than a murder mystery, although there is a murder. Although many of the elements of the crime are fairly obvious before the end, May lets the elements unfold in a way that elegantly tells the story of life in the harsh geography of the islands from the 1950s through the present day. The characters are compelling and the setting haunting. One of the most interesting techniques in the book is the use of the narrative voice of an elderly man suffering from Alzheimers to tell the past story in a present voice. It raises interesting questions about how our past shapes us and stays with us and how we understand ourselves through our beliefs about our family and those around us. Looking forward to number three in the trilogy.

Enjoying this trilogy. This one picks up a short while after the first finished - Fin has returned to the island following the end of his marriage, he's resigned from his job, but gets pulled into a murder investigation that involves his childhood sweetheart, her father, and her son, and granddaughter.

I když je druhý díl Lewisovské trilogie stále velmi dobře napsaný, autor sám sebe neuvěřitelně vykrádá. Stejné prostředí, stejný rozervaný hrdina, stejné střídání se třetí a první osoby ve vyprávění a stejné střídání přítomného a minulého času. Bohužel nemůžu doporučit.

The second book of Lewis island trilogy is still a very good piece of work but the author keep to steadily repeating himself. In the roman there is a same hero with same problems, same changes of first and third person narrative and same jumps in time from past to present and conversely. Even though it hurt to say: I cannot recommend this book.

A great novel, but at times if felt a little forced or oddly serendipitous. The idea is excellent and the exploration of how children are abused by the state and the church was well done. Maybe the mystery was too tight to get it done without some weirdly beneficial happenings, but overall it's still a solid continuation of the series.
