When Detective Lena Adams is held for a suspicious case of arson, Jeffrey and Sara come to Lena's hometown to vouch for her. But Sara's distraction from a recent malpractice lawsuit allows Lena to escape custody. Now Jeffrey and Sara must figure out what Lena is hiding, including what happened to her uncle, who has been missing in recent days.

The final chapter of the Grant County series is bittersweet. On the one hand, it's fascinating story, told both before the arson and after Lena's escape, as Jeffrey and local law enforcement try to track her down. The mystery is more central than in previous installments, where Jeffrey and Sara's fractured relationship sometimes overtakes the murder at hand. But the ending comes all too soon and, although I sympathize with the author's feeling that only so many serious crimes can happen in one small community, it's hard to say goodbye to these characters I've come to know and love. On to the Will Trent series!

Much like watching Titanic; I knew how this series was going to end. Also like Titanic, I kept hoping for a different outcome. The end isn't really a surprise for anyone who has read the Will Trent series, and has fallen in love with Sarah's character. But that doesn't make it any less heartbreaking.

That being said, holy moly was this one violent, gruesome, disgusting ride. I now know more about meth than two seasons of Breaking Bad could have taught me. There were entire sections of this book I needed to skip. But damn, it was a fun ride.

I was so disinterested in this story which is so weird for a Karin Slaughter book.. and the way she ended it was just annoying. I like these characters so I’m confused why this one wasn’t as compelling to me as the others in the series.

Are you freaking kidding me? I knew Karin Slaughter does not exactly write happy ending, but dang… the ending of this series has me livid and devastated.

Frustratingly entertaining is how I would try to describe this book and series it belongs to. The sixth installment of the Grant County series finds our main characters neck deep in sorrow and sadistic, racist, drug dealing skin heads.
The entertaining part of this series is how screwed up all the main characters lives have become. I'm drawn in just to see what kind of s..t is gonna happen next to make every single character in these books beyond miserable. Karin Slaughter must love making everyone depressed, but I still find myself intrigued and can honestly say I was a little giddy at the end of this one. One "main" character down, two to go!
The frustrating part of this book, and possibly the whole series, is the lack of characters in the book that aren't meant to be major characters...by that, I mean it seems that every character we get introduced to in this book turns out to be part of the "evil scheme". Even, the cleaning lady at the motel is someone major. It's getting to the point where any time a new person is added to the story line, I start thinking to myself, "how is this guy involved in the evil scheme of things" or "how is this person gonna die", or "in a future book in the grant county series, how is this person gonna come back to be a rapist/murderer".
Anyhoo, it's my understanding that the next time we see Sara from this series, she is tag teaming with the folks from the Will Trent series which I enjoy. So, I'm looking forward to seeing how Sara makes Will's life miserable!

uHuh. Wow. I hated this book. Not for the ending - kinda saw that coming before I got the spoiler, even though it was rather brutal. But the back and forth, the confusion of time lines - it was too much. I couldn't figure out what was going on, couldn't keep track of the 'bad guys' or the 'good guys'. Too many characters, not in Grant County.
And, I never want to go anywhere near Georgia, if even 1 page on this series is accurate, just saying.
But yeah, didn't like this book. Too much Lena, too much drama, too much yuck. Not enough actual mystery.
And it still really, really feels like there's a story missing from before this book started. There are story lines that are just disconnected, and it really left me feeling like I had no idea what was going on. I feel like I not only picked up a book in a series w/out reading the previous, but also like there were 5-6 chapters missing.

This is one of those endlessly pitiless books--Dennis Lehane writes books like this, as does James Lee Burke. The people are depraved (although depraved in different ways, and undeniably colorful)--and the action is nothing but a downward suck into evil.

This was my first Karin Slaughter book. Wish I'd started with #1, because reading this one first rendered the others moot. Going to start on another one of Slaughter's series, because I like her writing, and found the characters fascinating, even though the book was a dead end.
