My heart hurts and I'll be picking up Smedley's next book immediately

-1 star because of the internalized queerphobia; however, this book made me feel SO MANY things. The writing style was just...purely addictive and compelling. It was tough to get through, but I feel like it ended in a good place.

This book was 100% not what I was expecting. It made me so angry, yet I absolutely couldn't put it down. To paraphrase another reviewer here: "Horrifying, yet phenomenal."

A spectacular beginning for this young author. Young love, discovery, the pain of self-knowledge, a villain, and a big surprise ending. Nathan is being deposed in a criminal case against his best high school friend. Between episodes of the deposition, the story unfolds in short (too short IMHO) chapters. What impresses me the most is how the story telling flies along on wings (easy and compelling). Looking forward to more from Mr. Smedly.

Oh, Nate. Nate, Nate, Nate.

This book...I don’t quite know how I feel about it. For the first 100 pages, I wasn’t quite sold on it; the middle chunk, I was angry, I was sad, I was disgusted; by the end, I was just flat-out sobbing my eyes out in the best way possible.

TL; DR: A powerful, realistic, and absolutely devastating coming of age tale that breaks your heart over and over and over again. Worth the read for sure.
