I enjoyed this, but not as much as I expected to.
It made me emotional because I am the same age as the main character and have similar struggles to her. I could relate to Grace, except for the part where she shuts people out and runs away lol.
I didn't love it, to be honest, because I feel the novel could have dived deeper into everything and the writing is not my cup of tea (I had to cringe at parts of the dialogue, but that's just me). That is a completely different book, though.
Actually, I think it works. It tackles important topics without it being melodramatic, it has relatable characters, it's a fun read and it's queer.
It's a nice entertaining novel.

I really loved the basic concepts of this story. The mental health issues resonated with me so much and I thought it was a lovely romance (I loved both the main character and Yuki)! I'm also a sucker for found family and the side characters made this story so much better.

The only reason I'm rating this lower is because there were parts of the novel that got really repetitive for me. I think I enjoyed the first half much more than I enjoyed the second half. After the halfway point, it started to constantly tell us things it had already said: the color of her skin and hair, the "Porter way", and it talks about Grace's internal struggles multiple times (which is not a bad thing except for the fact that it's word for word at times).

Overall, I enjoyed the story, but the writing just wasn't my favorite part.

It wasn't bad, but not much happened

Yeesh. I would NOT describe this book as a romance. If anything i'd guess its about family relationships and therapy? Whatever it was, I wasn't a fan. I was just sooooo bored ya know? First of all, the narrator for this audiobook was unbearable. She gave no personality to any of the characters. So if you read this book (although, i'm giving this one star so you can tell I wouldn't recommend that), opt for the physical copy.
Every character in this was underdeveloped and uninteresting. They made me cringe with their pet names for each other, Yuki's "radio show" was unbearable, and the constant therapeutic language about Porter's mental health struggle was exhausting. The second half of the book felt like listening in on someones therapy session.
As someone with extreme depression, it was a good depiction of the disorder. However, it wasn't an INTERESTING or well written story to accompany it. It's a bummer because its a common thing to suffer from, and I was excited to read a story about it.

I liked that damn near everyone in this book was LGBTQ.

"You may have to make a lot of noise, and the universe’s silence can be oppressive and thick. But you want them to hear you, and they will. So do not, not even for one second, stop making noise."

This book! I unexpectedly loved it, and was struck by how real it was. This is a quirky, wonderful book. Morgan Rogers is a talented writer, and creates diverse and realistic characters. I loved them all.

Grace Porter is an astronomer trying to figure out her career path, and feels unseen by prospective employers. Or more so, feels that her skin color and sexual orientation are the only things that are seen and dismissed as "not a good fit." She feels like everything she has worked toward is suddenly at stake, and doesn't know how to become the successful PhD she knows she is expected to be. She drunkenly gets married in Vegas, which brings all of her life choices to the forefront.

Honey Girl follows Grace during a time of crisis, and doesn't shy aware from issues like mental health to depict her journey. There was a love story component, but the romantic drama is actually realistic and doesn't center around a silly misunderstanding, which is all too common a trope in contemporary romances. This book was amazingly written, and a joy to read!
