Not the book for me. It explored a lot of topics I enjoy reading about— mental health, race, privilege, found family, living up to expectations, and self-discovery— but it fell flat and missed its mark in my opinion.
The story just feels really shallow for some reason. Like it’s trying too hard to be deep and in doing so, fails miserably. The writing tries to be too flowery and metaphoric. It attempts to have beautiful prose and lyrical writing but it’s definitely falling short.
I couldn’t connect with any of the characters even though they all had back story. Our main character Grace’s problems seemed so contrived and she was making a big deal out of nothing. She’s surrounded by people that love her, but she feels so alone. This in and of itself is understandable, but I didn’t need to be told it 50 times. I would rather feel that emotion for myself from the characters and the way the story is crafted, not straight up said to me multiple times. Also in regards to her network of close friends, I have no idea how she met them or how she developed close relationships with them. Instead just a bunch of corny dialogue is exchanged about how much they care about each other. Again, please show don’t tell. The romance also carried no meaning or depth and I had no idea why they were so in love because there was no substance. And lastly, it was just so dragged out. It’s not even a long book, but it felt really repetitive.

i’m so sorry i know so many people love this book but i’m dnfing at 10%
i’ve never disliked a writing style so much. it made me cringe and uncomfortable throughout the short amount i read. stuff like the names constantly being repeated was driving me crazy and the writing just felt really forced and trying to be lyrical and beautiful which again made me cringe
i know i’m in the minority but it was just so bad to me, not my style at all which is so sad bc it was one of my most hyped reads and i expected to love it :(

Just a lil too hippy-dippy for me. Didn’t resonate. I wish the story had taken the stance of being about Grace’s journey from the beginning, having her romance with Yuki in it felt like a detour that never really paid off for me. Maybe that’s cuz I don’t buy into the cosmic “meant to be” kinda stuff very easily, but I just never felt excited about their relationship. Pacing was odd and I think there was too much time spent in some places and too little in others. Not a bad book, just not really for me.

This book was a big letdown for me. The romance was heavily on the back burner and there were no fireworks or even a spark between Yuki and Grace for me. I can see how this is an adult book because Grace is almost 30 and a lot of the book is about career struggles but the writing itself read more YA-ish. There are also a lot of words and phrases that are repeated in this book to the point that it gets a tad bit annoying, like every time Yuki is described it mentions how she smells of sea salt. Like, I get it the first time, maybe a nice reminder the second time, but the fifth time I'm just kinda over it.
I do think this book had important commentary on how women of color are treated in the academic setting and workplace. Grace has a Ph.D. in astronomy and has to constantly fight to show her worth as a queer black woman which I felt was a very emotional and strong part of the story.
Overall, 2.25 stars.
