This was always one of my favourite books by Wilson. It is somehow just a little bit different to her others, especially considering how similar most of her book were.
I even began trying to sew my own fairies as I really loved the ones that Violet made in the story.
I still feel very nostalgically towards this book and like picking it up occasionally to read a few snip pits or admire the illustrations.

I’ve been a massive fan of Jacqueline Wilson since I was child. This book is my least favourite by a long shot. It should have been a hit based on the theme of family (including adoption), friendship and the magic of fairies. But there are some very serious issues of manipulation and control that went totally unaddressed and made me extremely uncomfortable. It’s all just very odd and felt very wrong. I’m not sure exactly what message was supposed to be convey here. Such a shame. The illustrations by Nick Sharratt were totally on point (as usual) though.

This was a very weird read... creepy and ominous throughout it felt like a YA not a children's book to me. The relationship between Violet and her brothers is bizarre and abusive, her parents marriage is problematic, and yet the story ends with a 'happily ever after vibe?! I'm seriously confused and definitely will not be recommending this to any of the (under 13) kids I teach! As an adult I enjoyed how effective the ominous atmosphere was, likes the illustrations and thought the changeling idea was really interesting & well handled but I feel I have to rate it as a kids book

This should be labeled as 'For Older Readers' or might as well 'Young Adult'. The plot was good and scary but too bad the conflict wasn't well resolved. It left me unsatisfied at the end.

There was definitely some really important stuff in this, about making new friends and a lot on adoption which was very moving.
However I understand why I didn’t like this book as a child. There’s a lot about the fairy book series, and that part never interested me. Overall a decent story that I would suggest to children, but comparing it to the other MG books out there now, it sadly wasn’t anything special.

This scared me as a kid, I came back to it a few years later and still couldn't get past the third chapter. Now I don't want to face it again because I'd have to admit that as an almost adult, I am still scared of a children's book. Also to clarify, by scared I am very spooked
