I'm originally from Michigan, but I've never been to the Upper Peninsula. Growing up, I never learned much about the Anishinaabe, other than one assembly at school where there was a jingle dress performance. I'm so glad to have this book to have some representation of Anishinaabe people.

The plot is complex and twisty turny, very mysterious up through the end. I didn't like that
cooperating with the state was seen as the only way of resolving the central conflict

I love this book not hiding from Native American life both good and bad.  So well done!

This book is truly amazing.

Daunis is such a great character and I loved reading this book through her perspective. From the very first chapter she is given so much personality  and it was so easy to fall in love with her. The other characters in this book are also given so much personality and life.

The pace of this book starts a little slow, but once it starts moving it doesn’t stop until the end. I never knew what was going to happen next in this book. I never knew who I could trust. This was one of the most tense books I’ve read in a long time just because I was rooting so hard for the characters.

The romantic aspect of this book is also very well done. It’s sort of a fake-dating trope (which I love), but it’s so much more than that.

The setting and culture in this book is perfectly written and so vivid. I learned so much about Daunis’s culture and the problems her community faces both from the federal government and drugs. I loved her struggle with deciding between helping her community, and having to help the federal government to do it.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I highly recommend it.
