This book is truly amazing.

Daunis is such a great character and I loved reading this book through her perspective. From the very first chapter she is given so much personality  and it was so easy to fall in love with her. The other characters in this book are also given so much personality and life.

The pace of this book starts a little slow, but once it starts moving it doesn’t stop until the end. I never knew what was going to happen next in this book. I never knew who I could trust. This was one of the most tense books I’ve read in a long time just because I was rooting so hard for the characters.

The romantic aspect of this book is also very well done. It’s sort of a fake-dating trope (which I love), but it’s so much more than that.

The setting and culture in this book is perfectly written and so vivid. I learned so much about Daunis’s culture and the problems her community faces both from the federal government and drugs. I loved her struggle with deciding between helping her community, and having to help the federal government to do it.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I highly recommend it.

Beautifully written; read when you are ready for some intense feelings about dark subjects to sneak up through relatively non-graphic story points. This book manages to fold together dark themes and hopeful ones into a compelling sleuth mystery story.

I am of two minds about this book. On the one hand, I thought that the themes and messages were fantastic, but unfortunately, I thought the plot itself fell short.

In my opinion, the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge and commentary was excellent. The author seamlessly incorporated Anishinaabemowin words, Ojibwe cultural teachings and traditions, and discussed historical and contemporary social political issues. The messaging about colonialism, systemic oppression, mixed-race identity, healthy relationships, etc. was great.

Sadly, I found the plot to be a bit hokey, in that it was very unbelievable yet simultaneously predictable.
The FBI sending an undercover agent into a HIGH SCHOOL and recruiting an 18-year-old as a CI? Come on… And a bunch of high school kids running a meth operation and trying to recruit a science nerd to cook the best meth?? Ok Walter White… I think it would have been significantly less cringey if the author had aged the characters up to be university students
I will say, the last third of the book did improve the plot, but ultimately, it was quite a bit more YA than I was expecting/hoping.

Overall, I would recommend the book, and encourage readers to push through the beginning.

Specific to the audiobook:
I would absolutely recommend listening to this as an audiobook. Isabella Star LaBlanc did a fantastic job narrating and it was great to hear the correct pronunciation of Anishinaabemowin words.
