The story is wonderful and enchanting. It's a charming fairytale. I found it difficult to connect with the characters as they seemed one note and surface level, but they were still great and i found myself rooting for them and their relationships. The world isn't fully fleshed out but the atmosphere is lovely. The story is a bit predictable but i don't think that is an issue. This story isn't supposed to be full of shocking turns. It is a magical ride i was happy to be a part of. A great standalone.

If you love fairytales, you might enjoy this book.

I say this because this book feels like a fairytale, albeit not neccesarily in a good way. The worldbuilding feels rushed, the characters shallow and the pacing off. The plot is predictable and the dialogues are unrealistic. It's a hopeful and optimistic tale, but it comes off as childish and none of the events hold much weight. I don't like the writing style either, it feels more suited for a soap opera than a fantasy book. That's probably the reason I enjoyed XOXO much more, the writing style feeling more fitting for a fanfiction type novel than a mythological one.

I did enjoy the concept, and it's not too bad if you read it with low expectations. 2/5

Spirited Away meets Princess Mononoke in the The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea. This book totally gave me epic anime vibes (the demon snakes reminded me so much of demon hordes from Inuyasha) which made it such a fun read.

I wish that there was a bit more world building in regards to the Spirit Realm’s social structure of Gods and Goddesses, but in a quick, 320 page fantasy standalone, you can’t have it all.

“Wait for me, where the land meets the sea.”

Can we also talk about that cover?! Gorgeous!

I love love love love this book.
I adored the whimsical feeling of it. It gave me the same feelings of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, which is a piece of media I absolutely love.
The story was a bit predictable and the pacing was a little off at times, but i thought the romance was really good. The writing was beautiful and poetic, the characters were all lovely, and the world the story was set in was charming!
