Oh my god, the lore nerd in me is hyperventilating like I just chugged a potion of mana! Ruination was an absolute treat, and honestly, we need a whole series of these! The lore of Runeterra is richer than a double chocolate cake, and I’m here for every delicious crumb!
The pacing? Chef's kiss! It’s like a perfectly timed combo that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This book is a gold mine for anyone who has even a passing interest in the lore—rewarding in all the right ways. You’ll feel like you just unlocked a secret level in the game!
And can we take a moment for my sweet, trusting Kalista? She deserves so much more than the chaos swirling around her! I love her fiercely, and my heart aches for everything she goes through.
As for you, Hecarim and Viego? Fuck you both. Seriously, you guys could give betrayal lessons! You’re like that friend who always “forgets” to pay you back while eating your snacks—just the worst!
And let’s not forget Ryze, who REALLY dropped the ball this time. I mean, come on, dude! Did you lose your spellbook? Because you’ve got some explaining to do!
Thresh, you fudging douchebaggy, self-important, inflated ego-maniac fucking creep. BACK TO THE CELLAR WITH YOU.
Overall, Ruination is a must-read for anyone who loves epic lore, juicy betrayals, and characters that make you want to shout at the page. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go recover from all this glorious chaos!
Betrayers.

it could've been better, but i suppose it's not as bad as novelizations usually go. i would recommend it to:
1) league fans who are interested in the lore of the shadow isles
2) people who love to see a character undone by grief and/or loving someone so much they commit awful things for them
i am both of these, so i enjoyed this book even though the characters are kind of flat, there's too much telling, & there's too much action and not enough interiority.
i definitely recommend listening to the audiobook over reading, as the full cast makes the flaws in writing much more bearable. (my only gripe about it is hecarim and thresh sounding so cartoonishly evil right off the bat. please, spare some subtlety for us lowly mortals). otherwise it's great. i especially loved kalista, thresh, and viego performances; kalista for her sincerity, the other two for being utterly insane.
anyways. "all i do is out of love for her." "if she could see you now, she would despise you." out of five.

The lore was great, the writing left a lot to be desired. Very… I guess dry is the right word?? But the story moves fast, the events are interesting, and the conclusion is satisfying. I’m really glad this book didn’t shy away from character deaths.
Speaking of characters, Vennix is a bad bitch and I want to read more about her 🙂↕️
Solid 3.5. Read this if you’re into League lore, but probably skip if you’re looking for a random new fantasy to pick up.

I will admit I'm biased as I am a fan of Riot's Runeterra universe and some of the characters in this book specifically. I came into this book knowing the broad strokes of the story it was to tell but was pleasantly surprised by the detail and care put into making what had essentially devolved into legend in-universe into a proper novel.
I can't speak for if non-existing fans will love it as much as I did, but I feel it does a good job of explaining it's universe without bogging itself down in too many irrelevant details. I think it may be a good starting point for those interested in the universe who maybe weren't excited by the more steampunk setting of Arcane (the show). It's not as deep as Arcane, with less symbolism to explore and a more straightforward cast of villains and heroes but as a 400 page novelI think it accomplishes quite a lot without rushing or meandering itself into a book series (something that could've been done but frankly isn't needed).
Even if you're not looking to get into the whole universe, I think this could be a really enjoyable one and done story for those who don't mind a bit of lingering darkness in their books and like to ponder what could have happened had a character made a different choice.
For me, I will definitely be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it to any friends with an interest. It's a solid fantasy and I look forward to any more upcoming novels by Reynolds or the Runeterra team.
