I think this is the first book by Beverly Jenkins that I didn't care for too much. I still want to go through her back list but I was just not vibing with this one. The writing was good but I just wasn't as convinced about the desire between the two MMCs.

As someone who does not typically read romance, I decided to give it a try with this book. I found it unable to hold my attention (only got to page 5 or so).

Idc what anyone says I love Beverly Jenkins. This was a reread for me because I just kept coming across black love that weren’t really the black love I was looking for. Almost all of her historical books follow the same pattern of a strong woman and a strong man who wants to do nothing but love on her and I eat  it up everytime 🤣 the writing can be very simple at times and it does jump POVs sporadically even when explaining or giving a historical fact but it’s not like I went in expecting to read the romance of the century. I just wanted a simple love story

NOBODY deals with villains like Ms. Beverly "there's a knife in the boat to cut yourself loose if you can find it before the boat sinks but whoops the gators got you" Jenkins!!! Nobody is doing it like her!!!

Romantic and sexy in the way that historical fiction often is, with a relatively good (not necessarily totally truthful) representation of a black woman's experience in the South after the Civil War.

While very romanticised, it's still really nice to see a thriving black woman in this period who still faces discrimination and fear that would be expected. Wealth and education is her protection, along with wealthy friends, and she wants to pass it on for the community. Drake is dashing, adventurous, and very very rougeish that it's hard to not fall into his charms.

The men we're supposed to root for are ridiculously forward thinking, but again this is more of a fantastic romance than an academic history work.

my first romance novel! it was ok. I wanted more feminism. I'll try others!
