This was a very educational book and I'm glad I read it. It's not, in my opinion, always the most riveting in writing style, but it is a fascinating look at an incredible man's life from his own perspective.
I didn't like this book. IT was hard for me to get through, I felt bored reading it. I think it was because I am not that familiar with the time and place. As another reader put it, it is a dry read.
An afternoon without power lends itself well to really getting into a book and finishing it!
This was a great book although a long read. It is over 600 pages! It was fascinating and entertaining but slow to get through. Every word counted so it required focus. It was worth every minute. I learned a lot about an event that occurred in my lifetime. That seems impossible to believe.

Nelson Mandela led a fascinating life - from growing up in a tribal communal family situation to becoming a lawyer, a freedom fighter and prisoner to being elected by Parliament as the first President of a democratic South Africa. His birth name was Rolihlahla. He was given the name Nelson by an English school teacher. His father died when he was 15 years old and he was sent to live with another family where he received a secondary education. He was expelled from college and ran away from home when a marriage was arranged for him. There are so many twists and turns to his life that it is impossible to list them all!
The book is very detailed and the names of people and places are very difficult for an American to pronounce. I think the book is too detailed. I think that every person he spoke to is mentioned!
The trials are very interesting. The discrimination in the 1950s and 60s is incredible! The laws the givernment passed to take away land, homes and rights of Africans is hard to believe. The story of Nelson Mandela's life is astonishing to me!

Utterly engrossing. Mandela writes candidly about life as a freedom fighter and political prisoner and provides a humanizing, intimate look into one of recent history's greatest struggles and the life of one of its greatest men.
A new favourite. But glad it’s done so I can stop being late to things and sleep deprived

Wow this is good- he lived such a tortured life defending the things he really believed in. It made me cry about 10 times, partly due to the beauty and the pain expressed, but also partly due to the book being 750 pages long. It inspires a real belief in grassroots social movements.

Mandela truly had an incredible life filled with humility and fierce love for the people of South Africa. It comes across throughout the book. An unforgettable read.
