Really interesting format that speaks to the idea of societal scripts and roles. I think the message of the book is good for most Asian Americans and other Americans, especially since it was published in 2020. If you’ve read a lot of Asian am lit or have a background in Asian am studies/ethnic studies/sociology might be a little redundant. Message was very heavy handed but considering the state of today’s general population’s media interpretation, it is necessary. I think it was a little difficult to parse through reality in this work, but so far this blurring of lines between reality, imagination, and memory is a prominent feature of Yu’s work.
The author’s tone is wry and clever. It gave me a new perspective, and I appreciated it!

Charles Yu’s Interior Chinatown is one of the most unconventional novels I’ve read – a sharp mix of screenplay format, narrative, and biting satire. The structure is clever, constantly blurring the line between performance and reality while exploring how stereotypes shape identity and limit personal freedom.
As a white woman, I felt some distance from the story. I could observe and appreciate the critique of representation and racial typecasting, but I couldn’t fully relate to the lived experiences at its core. That said, I admire how Yu forces the reader to sit with discomfort, asking who gets to be the lead in their own story and who remains in the background.
This book is bold and thought-provoking, even if it didn’t always pull me in emotionally. I respect its ambition and originality, but I was left conflicted about how much it resonated with me personally.

A difficult read for me at some points as a Taiwanese American myself. I thought it was too pessimistic but appreciated the satirical perspective and really enjoyed the last chapters with OB and the history of the laws and how the story wrapped up with the same realization and acceptance of my own American identity and experience. This book has verbalized everything I’ve ever wanted to say but didn’t have the words for.
