Two friends journey down the Danube River and find themselves at an island where the elements are a force to be reckoned with. As they set up camp they begin to note strange occurrences, the wind steadily increases as does the surrounding water levels, eroding the island area and closing in on them.

Are the willows moving closer? Who or what sabotaged their supplies and canoe? What is hiding in the willows at night? An atmospheric, creepy tale that gets under your skin. At times the language is a bit dense and it ruins the pacing and flow of the book, nevertheless it's a worthwhile read for any horror lover.

Recommended for those that love quiet horror moments.

This was my favorite read this year! This teeny story is wonderfully written and completely eerie. A fantastic read for a dark night in.

Usually try to read something a bit spooky this time of year. This was a good proto weird fiction

For a book written in 1907, this was amazing!

I tend to struggle with some classics due to wordiness and getting to the point.
The Willows is a classic that I had to read regardless of my track record.

Earlier in the month, I read The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher and she based the portal in that book to The Willows.
I can see why she did along with her love for this book.

Algernon Blackwood turned an ordinary canoe and camping trip along the Danube River into a horror induced nightmare.

It’s a twisted tale of willows creeping closer in the dark.
It’s a place in where the spiritual and physical dimension is thin and malevolent forces are all around.
Forces become stronger when you’re scared and is that pattering footsteps outside of your tent?

I’m glad I picked this one up and I’m definitely reading more by Blackwood in the future.
What an imagination this guy had!!

Looking at a willow tree is going to be a whole new experience for me!

I always search for horror stories that can satisfy me the same way Lovecraft does. This is one of those tales and it even satisfied Lovecraft himself! A quick read about two men facing an unseen force.

Loved it!
