First in a 5 book series set in the FBI's NYC office, which can be read as a stand alone, but the seeds of a larger connecting story are planted. Archeologist Sophie and Agent Damon are on the run not knowing who to trust when Sophie's father, head of the FBI's organized crime division dies in a car accident that may not have been an accident, after managing to leave a cryptic message on Sophie's cell phone that sends her into hiding.
Freethy writes good action filled romantic suspense, but the ebook versions need both a better editor and proof reader. Besides the irritating occasional missing pronouns, nouns, and verbs, it is geographically impossible for anyone on the 2nd floor of a luxury townhouse or mansion anywhere on the upper east side of Manhattan to see the Hudson River. Seriously.

HOW THIS BOOK IS DAMN LEGIT AND HOW NO ONE’S TALKING ABOUT IT THIS IS INFURIATING
I devoured Perilous Trust in one sitting like a champion. The crime-thriller takes presumably 80% of the story and everything is finely tucked and plotted. I read the last chapters super slowly since I don’t wanna part with Sophie and Damon. Their chemistry and lovely dialogue left me wanting for more!

Loved it!
I do believe this is the fastest I’ve ever read a book. The romance and suspense is amazing as usual. Can not wait to dive into book 2!

Perilous Trust is the 1st book in the Off The Grid: FBI series.
Sophie is totally thrown when her father died. He had left several voice mail messages for her prior to his death that lead her to believe that she is in danger and not to trust anyone, including previous close friends/FBI co-workers of her father's.
Damon locates Sophie at her family's cabin where her first clue from her father's voicemail's led her. While they are escaping from being shot out Damon convinces her to let him go with her.
Sophie is very cautious and it takes quite a bit for her to trust Damon. It doesn't help that these two had a one night stand prior to Damon realizing who Sophie's father was.
I loved the intrigue, suspense, mystery paths that this story took. It drew me into the story and kept me intrigued to the very end. It was almost like being on a savager hunt. I was guessing all through the book on who to trust and who not to trust.
The secondary characters, Bree and Wyatt, really add another layer to this book. I hope to see more of all these characters in the book....maybe a love interest between Bree and Wyatt?

Perilous Trust gets us started off the right way on a great new series. This is an action packed, suspenseful, unbelievably sweet romance. What do you do when your entire world is shaken and turned upside down, when you have no where to run to and no one to trust. What do you do when all the signs are pointing to the fact that the only person you had in your life, the only person who truly held you heart, may have been the bad guy? What do you do when this man, your father turns up dead after leaving you a cryptic message? What do you do when your past, a past that broke you, walks back into your life and you have to place that life in his hands?
Perilous Trust is the story of Sophie Parker, a young NYU College professor just doing what she loves and spending time with her favorite man, her father, an FBI agent, when she can. Her simple world comes crashing down when two FBI agents walk into her class room peppering her with questions and telling her that her father is dead. If that news isn't bad enough when she pulls out her phone to start calling family she notices multiple calls from her father, calls telling her he's sorry and to trust no one and the final call that finishes with the sounds of a horrific crash and the end of her father's life. Fearing for her life, Sophie does the only thing she can, she trusts that her father is trying to save her and heads out to follow the cryptic directions he left in his voicemail messages.
Damon Wolfe, an FBI agent brought up to NYC by his mentor finds himself in a precarious situation after the death of that mentor, Allan Parker, Sophie's father. He and Sophie have a history, one night that he's never been able to forget, and he may just know where she's disappeared to, but can he trust the FBI to save her or is someone inside the bureau out to make sure that she like her father never speaks again?
I really enjoyed the story of these two characters, their development through the book and most importantly to me that they stay true to themselves. This isn't a story about the heroine suddenly becoming some badarse super spy when until now she's been a meek college professor or a hero doing miraculous things to save the women he loves. This is a story about two people attempting to stay alive and find the truth. I loved that Sophie was scared, that she panicked, that she got anxious. I also love that she kept it together. That with Damon beside her she recognized that her time to breakdown would come, it just couldn't be until everything was over. I loved that Damon relied on his friends, that they have this network to help and protect each other, that they know they aren't on their own and that they always have people they can trust when it feels like they have no one. There is true character development. These two grow as you would expect any one to under these circumstances.
I also really loved that the romance while powerful and honest wasn't the sole purpose of this story. This is a romantic suspense and the suspense and action were all there. There weren't these unbelievable romantic trysts in the 'middle of a gun fight' we so often see these days. Don't get me wrong, I love the romance as much as the next reader, but there is a time and a place and I so appreciate that Barbara Freethy realized that. She gave us true and honest moments between these two characters so nothing feels out of place or contrived. The tension is there and it meshes wonderfully with the suspense and when the time comes for the couple to well...couple, it isn't rushed or unrealistic. It is an enhancement to the story instead of a distraction.
I am really excited about the possibilities for the secondary characters in the series, in particular our undercover agent who I won't tell you anything about, haha. Just know he has got a load of baggage and his book is going to be pretty darn intense I think. I hope that Barbara is able to give him the story and the companion that he needs because that person, I think, is going to have to be pretty darn strong.
This is a great start to a new series. I have never been a huge suspense fan but I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more! I'll definitely be going back and checking out this new to me authors past work. If you are looking for an action packed, suspenseful story with a wonderful romance in the mix grab up this book, the ride has only just begun and I think it is going to just get better and better!

This book has a great premise and a solid start--it had me hooked from the very first page, and I was on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next for Damon and Sophie and to a lesser degree, Bree and Wyatt. Damon and Sophie had a (brief) history as well, which also piqued my interest, and kept me turning pages, wanting to see what they would do with it. The suspense part of the story was solid, I honestly didn't know who did what and exactly why until the end, when all was revealed. (Quick question--do real-life antagonists really tell all in the end to the heroes, even if they think they've already won? It really seems more like convenient fictional exposition than realism...still, at least we get to know the truth.)
Somewhere in the second half of the story, though, the suspense became more real than the romance. It felt like Sophie and Damon went from "let's try and forget about that awkwardly-ending night four years ago" to love a little too fast, skipping some crucial steps in between along the way. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to believe in their relationship, but it didn't feel like there was enough foundation laid down for what it was supposed to be becoming. Still, I did like them together and their epilogue was darn cute.
The next two books will be Bree and Wyatt's, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them. Even though this story wasn't perfect, Ms. Freethy definitely grabbed my interest with her characters and I'm looking forward to more gotta-find-out-the-truth suspense.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B

It's been a while since I have had the fun of reading a brilliant romantic suspense book - Perilous Trust gets me back into this genre with a bang!
FBI Agent Damon Wolfe (definitely a hero's name! :P) is a man on a mission to forget his past - a past that involves the only woman who has ever made him feel anything more than just one night. A woman who is close to him, but someone he believes he doesn't deserve because he can't give her everything she deserves.
Sophie Parker is a talented, intelligent woman - a woman who is about to be thrust into the run for her life - and the last thing she expects is the help of a man she spent one night with four years, a man who left her in the morning and hasn't looked back since.

Her father's "accidental death" and a mysterious voice mail leaves her no choice but to go on the run - and she never expected Damon to come after her and to go on the run with her; just for the reason of helping her.
Perilous Trust would be considered a romantic suspense; but the romance doesn't overwhelm the reader - and I liked it that way! I loved that the romance wasn't in the face the plot is fasts paced, and it is definitely suspenseful that even I wasn't able to guess exactly who was the culprit here!
The ending though did come off as anti - climatic and predictable; but not enough that I wasn't
entertained while reading the book! Definitely going to look out for the next book in the series! :D

This was a fast-paced story with likeable characters. Sophie Parker's father heads the organized crime unit of the FBI in New York. He is killed and left her a message telling her not to trust anyone, even the FBI, prior to his death. Sophie met FBI agent, Damon Wolfe, four years ago at the wake of a mutual friend. They spent the night together. Neither has really gotten over that night, but they haven't seen each other since. Damon recently moved to NY to work for her father. Sophie is running as her Dad told her to. Damon finds her and they go on the run together. They barely escape a couple of times. They don't know who they can't trust in the FBI. The storyline was interesting and it wrapped up well. I really enjoyed this and would recommend it. I will definitely read more books in this series.
I loved this book! Sophie is someone I really related to, and I was really rooting for her and Damon! A very fast paced and interesting read - totally worth a second read!
