Pros:
interesting setting
Romantic interest

Cons:
Immature characters (middle aged people acting like teenagers)
Repetitive (if you took a shot for every mention of muffins you would be dead from alcohol poisoning)
Sudden reveal of murderer that is the almighty worst person

2.5 - 3*. I liked Lynn Cahoon's other coZy series. This one, I'm okay with. The premise is good. Writer moved back to hometown after inheriting house from ex-husband. Started an author's retreat, and inevitably someone is murdered. I like the characters and the setting. I have some issues with how the mystery is resolved. But for light reading, it's not a bad book.

Needed another edit. “...finally became final.” ?? Lead character’s groan and eye-roll inducing inner monologue about her handyman was high on my list of complaints that nearly made me quit the book.

Audiobook reader’s performance is kind of sing-song. I’ve heard better work from her.

Cat got divorced almost 3 years ago but after the recent death (6 months ago) of her ex-husband she was surprised she inherited their marital home in her home town. So she returned there and decided to start a writers retreat, as she is an author herself.

The book begins when the first retreat is starting and the guests are arriving. Among them an already famous author, Tom Cook. The other guests are writers hoping to publish. At the very first day Cat finds Tom in his room, bludgeoned to death!

This is a very pleasant cozy. Although her uncle is the chief of police, Cat goes sleuthing. Meanwhile she is trying to assess her feelings for Seth Howard, the handsome handyman working at the house, who also was her highschool boyfriend. Soon after their breakup Cat met and married her ex-husband, who cheated on her which lead to their divorce.

I liked the story and the main characters. Although I wished for some more information about the past of Cat and Seth. The story is finished, although there are some leads into the next book and the last chapter finishes on that note. I normally am into cozies with a bit more of a higher pace, but I can see the charm of it and am sure many will enjoy it.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Intensely self-absorbed main character whose petulance just did not work for me.

Logic issues like why is a hired handyman doing carpentry during the one week per month there is a writing retreat at the house? Does that author not get just how loud that would be?

This is very clearly the first book in the series. The author is setting up Cat, returning to her hometown and grappling with her past, as well as her recurring cast. I didn’t get Seth as her love interest AND I have a huge problem with how characters talked about professors sleeping with their students. I am a grad student and that behavior is not a “well it happens” kind of thing. But I liked the mystery and I liked Cat, so I’m into the series.
