This was very good! Really enjoyed it. Seraphina is a compelling main character and her dislike of herself makes sense —a lot of the time MC's self hatred seem unfounded and end up irritable. Here, it made sense and I really enjoyed her friendships and relationships to the other characters in the story.

I received this book as a gift 7 or 8 years ago from a friend of mine but never read it (or read the first chapter and didn’t love Seraphina’s voice). Now that I’ve read it, I very much regret not reading it sooner.
While it took me some time to get into the story, I soon got lost in Seraphina’s world, and her secret identity. Her love of music and identity within her world filled me up and left me hungry for more.
As I read on, I became more and more intrigued by this world and the people in it, as well as the mystery that Seraphina and Kiggs attempt to solve.
My one complaint would be that other than Seraphina, many other characters fell slightly flat, which may have been because the story is from Seraphina’s point of view and her mind can be very closed off.
But overall, this book was wondering and a joy to read.

Cuando empecé a leer esta novela, no sabía qué esperarme de sus dragones. ¿Cómo que pueden llegar a ser matemáticos, políticos o profesores? ¿He leído bien?

I liked it, and I think I'll like it even more with some distance from the minor quibbles (inconsistency of voice and some mild flaws in the setting and in characterization of the dragons, nothing too significant). Really original and interesting world, likable and unexpected heroine. The resolution(ish) of the romantic subplot was a shame; much better with an open question. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the inevitable sequels.

This is everything I want in a fantasy.
3.5 stars.
I enjoyed this book. It had the fantasy, a slice of romance (without anyone getting undressed thanks goodness), and it's own world. I can best describe how good something is through how I feel and 3 words to describe this book would be; fleeting, thrilling and easy.
It transported me to another world, let alone time and place, as well as gave me some of the thrill I was seeking in a good ol' fantasy book. What I didn't like however was how easy a read this was. Sure, it had some complex and vividly descriptive words but I felt it didn't really add to the storyline itself as I felt it was underdeveloped. I would've loved a little more depth into the other characters and a bit more relationship building between some.
I can't help but feel (and hope) that perhaps I missed something in the book thats making me feel this way but i just needed something more of... substance.
This book felt like quick calories as in; it was REALLY enjoyable to consume yet it didn't leave a deep impression and wasn't anything more than it looked like.
I still like this book and will most likely continue reading the series :)

Oh yes. Now THAT is a dragon book. That is how you make a fantasy species feel real and a crossbreed interesting. I honestly loved Seraphina’s uncle, and Kiggs (sp? I listened to it, so) was an actually interesting love interest! Their conversations had layers! The world breathed and lived in her city and in far reaches mentioned offhandedly.
Seraphina made mistakes and triumphed and hated herself in a latrine (that scene KILLED me) and I loved her.
The audiobook was good. Most of the readers I’ve listened to recently have been American, so the accent surprised me, but made sense. She couldn’t really hold a tune/didn’t want to sing maybe though, so the song parts were a little weird.

I'd rate this between 3.5 and 4. It started really slow, but picked up halfway through, and the ending was nice.
