This was an aloud re-read to my wife, about 12 years after the first time and I was very glad the library had the ebook of the sequel because among the many things I'd forgotten was the cliffhanger ending!

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook of it since I didn't think I'd ever be able to set time aside to read it. I love dragons, always have, and this book has pulled me to it for a long time. I'm sure I have some things I don't like about it, but at this present moment I can't think of any.

I forgot how much I loved this book! Along with Seraphina, the side characters are all nuanced and interesting. The mystery of the plot is intriguing and engaging, drawing the reader into the thick of court politics and royal relations with the populace. Tension between the dragons and humans is palpable even with the treaty having been in effect for over 30 years.

Seraphina's plight resonated with me, the way her identity is thought of as imaginary, abnormal, and impossible all while being invisible. People around her assume things of her which cause her harm, which is similar to how it's damaging for a nonbinary person to be constantly misgendered. It was refreshing having gay side characters who weren't defined by their sexualities, nor persecuted.

One thing that struck me when I first read Seraphina, that hit me again through this second read-through, was that the emotions evoked in the reader are strong, real, and complex.

If you are looking for an evocative read, with politics, dragons, and nuanced characters, look no further! Seraphina is just the book for you.

I'm starting to regain my faith in YA Fantasy as a genre. This was a really enjoyable, interesting, solid story. Seraphina grounds the story with her keen wit and her ability to be honest with herself--if not always with the people around her. Good pacing, a decent twist at the end, some fresh ideas, and a few really special characters make this a fun, satisfying read. I hope there's another one!

Thar be dragons ahead! And apparently they can look like humans (if you ignore the complete lack of social graces). There is a treaty between them and us, but the distrust between our two peoples runs strong despite the last 40 years of peace. Seraphina is the assistant to the court composer and probably knows more about dragons than any other human in the country. But that may be because she is half dragon.

I devoured this first book. The conflict between dragon an human, old and young, fear and trust, and most importantly self. I can't wait for the next book, to meet more of the "grotesques" that love in her garden. I am especially intrigues by Jannoula.
