Flavia de Luce does it again! This 12-year old sleuth has just had a terrible tragedy befall the family, and she and her sisters, along with Dogger, go on a vacation. While there, Flavia catches a dead body and sets forth to solve the mystery of the man's death. While doing so, she uncovers some secrets and rights some wrongs while solving various crimes.
Flavia de Luce stories is a precocious young girl with a love of chemistry and a mind for solving murders. These books are a delight to read.

Flavia is on a summer holiday with her sisters and Dogger after her father's death. They were travelling down the river in a boat which was being rowed by Dogger. Flavia manages to entangle her fingers in a corpse’s mouth while dangling her hand in the water. I thought this was a bizarre way of finding a dead body. I would never sleep if I were Flavia!!

Anyway, Flavia being Flavia manages to inspect the corpse before the police takes over. She and Dogger works together and solves the mystery. Flavia is more mature and blending into adulthood nicely. Her bond with her sisters and especially Dogger is has caught my attention. I do miss that tantrum throwing or disobedient Flavia but everybody grows up.
I enjoy this series and look forward to seeing what will happen to Flavia.

Happy Reading!!

Awesome! Am I imagining it or are the de Luce sisters getting along? Very satisfying ending that makes me crave the next book.

Since this is book nine in the series, and I've read them all, it should be an automatic clue that I quite enjoy Flavia.

If it's still a mystery why Flavia is one of my favorite detectives, I've collected nine clues for you, in honor of this being the ninth in the series:

Clue 1 - Sassy, brilliant, still naive and practical.

Clue 2 - Relationships brimming with danger, confusion and malice

Clue 3 - The onion layered character, devoted to Flavia - a mystery unto himself.

Clue 4 - Bumbling individuals who need to rely on the expertise of a child.

Clue 5 - Bygone era.

Clue 6 - Rather stiff and curious individuals.

Clue 7 - Whimsical, fanciful and yet creepy

Clue 8 - Hidden layers revealed while some are kept secret

Clue 9 - The ever faithful, though exasperated individual

I will add there was one element I deeply missed - Gladys the bike was nowhere to be found between the pages of this book. I adore Flavia's relationship with her bike.

Answers to clues:

Clue 1 - Flavia herself...

This book is a bit of a breather, relatively speaking, after some of the changes and tragedies of some previous books; Flavia’s on vacation, and so is the reader. It also necessarily marks and introduces a turning point in Flavia’s situation, since her parents are both gone and she officially owns the old estate. As always, the book is a murder mystery, but the whodunit is far less important than how Flavia solves it, and what she says along the way to make the reader chuckle. Never a disappointment. And always clean reading, thanks very much, Mr. Bradley.

The ending left me unsatisfied. This is the only book in the series that I’m not over the moon with praise. One aspect I do love is the step up in the relationship between Dogger and Flavia. And the sisters are more friends than enemies as Flavia gets older; that part is interesting to observe.

Still charming and enjoyable, just not as I prefer.

Oh Flavia!! I absolutely love this series. While my favorite novels in the series take place at Buckshaw, I enjoyed the new location of this one. After a difficult few months, the de Luce family and Dogger take a vacation to a town that holds many secrets. Of course Flavia uncovers a mystery to be solved and we go along for the ride. I was overjoyed that Dogger played a bigger role in this story than any so far because he is one of my favorite characters. I have read several articles that state there will be 10 books in this series and I hope that is true. I need at least one more installment. I have only one word for this book....Yahrooooo!

I love Flavia. Loved the further development of Doggers character in this, also a bit more on the sisters. Didn’t like this story as much though.
