I absolutely flew through this book! However, I did not like it as much as the first. Mainly because of the Flashbacks to Lily. I understand why they are in this book, but I personally didn't like them, and they did not add anything to Kelseas story. The main reason I dislike them is, that I came to this book, looking for a medieval style fantasy, not a science fiction domestic thriller (and I did not care for the weirdly sect-religious-obsessive view they all had of the new world, especially when they all didn't want to have religion at all). I would have much preferred more insight into Kelsea and all the politics that are going on in the Tearling, as those parts to me seemed rushed in favour of telling Lilys story. It would have made more sense to put Lilys story into a prequel or sidestory, so you can choose to read this domestic thriller sort of story - in this context, you could hardly skim through these parts. I understand that it's fascinating how the new world became the Tearling of Kelseas time, but after the first book, I don't care about that, I care about what happens to Kelsea immediately. So by no means what this a bad book, but it sadly also wasn't the great book I hoped it would be after the first part.

I liked this even better than the first. Having to live with moral decisions you have made that both saved and killed people is difficult.
Started off a little rough for me but then the pacing, world and story from the old American new age world began to leap off the page. Fun series, what's coming next? Davina Porter read divinely, as usual.
Not as good as the first book. Answered a few of the questions left from book one, but also created more. As with the first book the story ends ajar, the reader isn't dangling on a cliff hanger, but also isn't completely satisfied. I didn't care for the disconnect between the two storylines. I think the author could have made the transitions from the two stories more seamless and less abrupt.
Well... I was hoping that the series might get better and that some of my unanswered questions from book one would get answered. Some questions did get answered - regarding the crossing and how everyone got to Kelsea’s situation today, however, the answers opened up a whole new slew of questions. I’m tired of asking questions. I’m two books into this trilogy but I still feel as though I don’t know or understand the world, the magic system, the structure of the society. And I care approximately 0% about any of the characters. I think it must just be the way we see the world through Kelsea and various other people’s perspective, but I don’t care at all about any of the characters. Even though we sit so long in Kelsea’s head, I don’t even think I understand her yet. And it has been two books, so you think you’d know her well by now.
An excellent follow-up to the first book. I'm enjoying the different voices and experiences represented in the book and starting to make some predictions about the coming drama and the history of some of the very long lasting characters.
"Experiential note": I don't love it that there are different narrators for the audiobooks in a trilogy. Having different voices represent the same characters in different ways is really messing with some of the dialogue for me. This problem becomes much more pronounced in the third book, which I'm listening to now. Some of the most important and distinctive characters are changing in my mind due to the qualities of their voices, as represented by the narrators. Something to think about. This may not be a big deal for someone if they don't "binge listen" the whole trilogy at the same time.

really enjoyed this installment. it's cool to see how kelsea + guards + other servants (lol) look out for each other and protect each other fiercely. (i am here for the mace/kelsea dynamic...) lily's pov was also an interesting move but the ENTIRE Greg experience was harrowing from start to end (trigger warning for domestic abuse!! D:)
