Carmen Maria Machado is an incredible writer. Dream House is one of the best books I've ever read. As a primarily before-bedtime reader, Dream House made it hard for me to get to sleep most nights.

Dream House centers on patterns of emotional abuse and manipulation, specifically within a queer relationship, that often hit too close to home for me. For anyone worried about starting the book for similar reasons, I can only say that Machado looks after her readers. The book is painful, but not callously so.

From a style standpoint, Dream House may hold the record for my favorite use of dramatic footnotes—and I love dramatic footnotes! The way Machado references the Thompson Motif-Index of Folk Literature is nothing short of showstopping.

I have found it difficult to put this narrative into words. All I can say is that I really felt it, not just the big bad stuff but all those small moments that seem to tally up into your psyche and be the most difficult parts to shake. I’m grateful for her willingness to share. For some reason I can’t rate this 5 stars and I’m not sure why.

Update: this has been moved to a 5 star rating out of sheer will, because I don’t know what else to do with my thoughts about it. Will have to read it again and maybe revise.

"You were not always just a you. I was whole, a symbiotic relationship between my best and worst parts, and then, in one sense of the definition, I was cleaved. A neat lob that took First Person, that assured confident woman, the girl detective, the adventurer, away from the Second, who was always anxious and vibrating like a too-small breed of dog."

"Even the enduring symbol of queerness, the rainbow, is a promise not to repeat an act of supreme violence by a capricious and rageful god. 'I won't flood the whole world again, it was a one-time thing, I swear. Do you trust me?' And the later, a threat: 'The next time motherfuckers, it will be fire'."
