Cute slow burn romance but way too short.

Most of the sports romances I read are romantic comedies, so this more serious contemporary romance was a pleasant surprise. The two main characters, Adrian and Janey, are quite layered; however, the side characters are more of the one-dimensional novella variety. I loved Adrian’s sister, though!

I would have liked more chemistry between Janey and Adrian. While they are a good fit as friends, I just wasn’t feeling them as a romantic couple. The novella is sweet and engaging. It just lacks certain elements that push it over from the “like” category into the “love” category for me. I have no doubt I would have enjoyed the story more if it were longer in length. Unquestionably, Emma Scott has the writing chops to develop the relationships and aspects of the plot more fully so that the story lives up to its fullest potential.

“How hard is it…to love so much? Like reaching through a fire….to pull the treasure from the flames.”

Perfect in nearly every way.

Janey a journalism student wants to make a difference and is willing to take those risks. Her father not so much-After getting too close to the Vietnam protests in California she is sent off to Paris by her father to keep her safe.

Adrien football player extraordinaire and medical student is an up and coming star in the French football league. He is torn between doing what his heart wants and what is right for his family. Being someone he isn’t is weighing heavily on him. That is until he meets Janey.

I loved the idea of Janey interviewing a footballer and that she has no idea about footie. But if she had said soccer one more time I would have dived into the book and strangled her. But the portraying of preconceived notions is spot on. As a female journalist in male dominated world she doesn’t want to write fluff pieces or be hit on she wants to be taken seriously. So she isn’t impressed with her story she has to write about Adrien but sometimes the small stories that are told are bigger than we think.

I liked both main characters and the chemistry they have with one another.

Once again Ms. Scott’s writing is flawless. She grips you with the emotions that she wants you to convey. It is a bit slow for my liking in the pace department that is slow build and burn romance with these two which is very sweet. Heat level is low and there is no angst here at all.

Though another winner by Ms. Scott it fell short for me as I wanted more of Janey & Adrien. I needed an extended epilogue although we get a five year later it was just too short and didn’t appease my thirst for more. Although romance in a different era also really isn’t my thing I really enjoyed this one.

”Sometimes it’s the smaller stories that have the greatest impact.”

5 stars. Such a sweet and heartwarming story. It’s a novella but Emma Scott manages to pack so much heart and depth into it. I’m amazed. I finished this with the biggest smile on my face.

The writing is absolutely beautiful. It’s set in France in 1970 and the author does a great job setting the tone and the scenery. Her descriptions are lush and vivid and really makes the story come to life. The characters are fully developed and their relationship was so romantic.

Janey is a very head strong, take no nonsense, journalist. I adored her character. She was driven and funny and even though at first she’s very closed off to Adrien, watching her let her guard down towards him was great. Keep in mind that since this is a novella, the relationship moves really fast but it honestly didn’t bother me because it was done really well.

Adrien broke my heart. His situation was tough and emotional. He had a lot of pressure on his shoulders but he’s such a sweet and kind hearted character. I loved him so much. He was very sweet towards Janey right from the start and I think they brought out the best in each other. I also liked his family, especially his sister, Sophie who has Cerebral Palsy. She was great and I wanted more of her.

Overall, I can definitely see myself re-reading this when I need a pick me up because while it has those emotional moments it’s still a really sweet and romantic read.

(Originally part of the Team Player anthology, now released as a novella) This is set in France in the early 70s- is there anything Emma Scott can't write? Sports romance is by far my favorite genre so I was so excited that one of my favorite authors added sports romance to her repertoire! Though short in length, this novella was packed full of so much heat and chemistry- it sizzled! Janey and Adrien were both such interesting characters and I absolutely tore through their story. So so so good!

I wasn't sure where this novella was going to go when I discovered it took place in the seventies in France. I could tell right away though, that this book was going to be SOMETHING. It was DEFINITELY one I've never read before.

Janey was a pretty inspiring heroine. She was independent and kept chasing her dream, but did it gracefully. You will 100% fall in love with Adrian. There's more to him than what meets the eye. I almost wish his sister would get her own story. She was an interesting character that didn't get enough screen time in my opinion.

One Good Man has become one of my FAVORITE pieces by Emma Scott.

Mon Dieu, c’est magnifique. Vraiment! This was a 5 star short story that packed a huge, huge punch. Janelle Martin is sent to the Sorbonne in Paris to finish her degree after being arrested for protesting about the Vietnam war.

Yes, people, throw yourselves back in time, think of MASH. Think of burning your bra. Hippy chicks with peasant tops and flared jeans.

Janey meets up and coming French footballer Adrien Rousseau and take me to the top of the Eiffel Tower, it was such a great read. Complexities I never imagined in a short story.
