OUUGGHHHHH the inherent body horror of being trans!!!!! the religious trauma, the regular trauma, the searching for community, the fight to survive, the struggle to be yourself and fit in and be who you are no matter what world you live in and what your circumstances are!! exquisite!! a solid story, not really my thing setting-wise but the characters were enough to carry me through. and a lot of impressive world-building and fleshing out (ha) of concepts!! solid solid book!!

Are you feeling full of rage and/or despair at the Supreme Court/America/society/the government? Or perhaps you are upset at the way in which the Fascist Right is using the failures of our government and unregulated capitalism to radicalize a large swath of the populous to return to "traditional Christian values" that disenfranchise large portions of the population? Maybe you read and/or watched The Handmaid's Tale and you were into it but felt that some of the ways in which it understood gender, sexuality, eco-fascism, and white supremacy were either outdated or not addressed to the extent that you felt they should be? If your answer to any of these questions are yes then I think this will be a satisfying read for you. The trigger warnings at the beginning of this book are real though, so take care friends. Depictions of body horror and graphic violence appear throughout the text as well as an intensely emotionally abusive relationship. Also lots of misgendering and gender/body dysphoria, though as someone who has not felt those issues personally, I cannot speak to what an emotional response to those would be. Also there is lots of wholesome friendship and overcoming these things, so even though it deals with some deep stuff, it's overall optimistic. Plus the cover slaps.

What an intense read. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not for the faint of heart. There's a lot of gore, religious trauma, transphobia, violence, and there's not a lot of moments where the characters are not going through something awful. This book is heavy. Extremely heavy. If you are not in a place where you can handle this well, I suggest skipping it. However, this book is necessary considering all the hell trans people go through on a daily basis. It is raw. It is angry. It is incredible.

The writing is blunt but it gets the point across. The characters feel real. And even though everything was rough, I did enjoy reading everything that happened within the story. There's a lot of religious rhetoric in this book so it may be a bit too much. But this is what this book is tackling so all of it is necessary. If you may be suffering from religious trauma or if you have so much anger in your heart, read this book. I believe it can give you the catharsis you may be looking for. Such an amazing read.
